Sold my Kenevo a while back and missing the electric on the trails. The Kenevo was great but I think something lighter would suit my riding.

So....... was looking at an exe with the discounts online at the moment.

I've started trailing through the megathread and other resources but just wondering which Spec from last year was the best bang for the buck. In terms of components and if needed upgrades.

Anything to def steer clear of .......

The benefit I found with the Fuel EXE 8 was the lighter frame weight, TQ motor, 360wh battery. Everything else was upgradable.

It’s my understanding that the TQ motor is now 60nm. I have the 50nm motor which is fine for my body weight. Apparently the new 60nm TQ has better cooling ability and sometimes a larger battery.
 
Steer clear of the 9.5,unless you have a lotof decent spare components to put on it. Most of the standard components (forks, brakes, wheels etc) are not fit for much more than riding tame forest paths. If you have a load of decent replacement parts then go for the 9.5.

The 9.7 and 9.8 look decent value if you're not going to replace the majority of the parts.

There’s a 9.8 GX AXS which looks pretty good.

I take it the medium will be fine for 5ft9, had a few treks before anything weird in the sizing with these exe?

I'm 5ft 10 and have the exe 9.8XT in medium and it fits great. All parts are suitable for my needs at the 7 stanes trail centres in Scotland. There are some deals on at the moment so hope you get a bargain.

Fair question. The short answer is…no. But I did it anyway for the Fuel EXE.
The price was right for the new carbon hoops, saved a few grams in weight, the warranty was appealing, adding new hubs at the time (project 321), did the lacing myself, slight difference in feel, and the cool-factor 😎.

I almost added Berd spokes…glad I didn’t.
I wouldn’t use carbon rims on the Rail, but the Fuel EXE, sure , why not. 🤷🏼‍♂️
 
Mine is a 2023 9.8 XT, bought in 2024 for a big discount. It is a Large and I am 6' 1" and 75kg (165lbs). My wife is 5' 9" and the Medium fits her perfectly. Highly recommend this bike as it rides superbly. Range for me is around 25 miles on a 50nm motor, using a mix of all three power options and a height gain of 3000ft. I often ride 30 mile cross-country routes, so I bought a range extender. It has been a great buy and loads of fun. The lighter weight frame makes it ride much more like an analogue bike, but with an added smile!

@Stuart54 that's answered the Q on the range, similar sort of riding for me mixed in with a few trail centres. With 2 laps at the centre coming out at around 15 miles or so and the range extender will hopefully do my longer rides which are around 25-30miles

Probably depends what your bike comes equipped with. I bought a 9.5, and the stock wheels were a bit... floppy. Picked up some Hunt carbon enduros which are fantastic, but if you started out on decent quality alloy rims the difference might be minimal.

Two and a half years on and I still love the way mine rides. Yes, every other motor system has more assist, but I still like to get a workout when I go riding, and I don't have the time for very long rides, so battery isn't a problem for me either.

I am 5’7 and have a medium 9.8XT (2022 model) which I think was the best bang for the buck. Love the rock shox suspension (better than fox factory on my analog bike). I think the medium would fit you well. Mine almost feels a bit long for me but of course longer is better on rougher stuff.
 
Hi all, bikes arrived and it’s spot on but I have a problem!!!!

The assistance mode won’t kick in at all. As in on the display I just get dashes!

The speed and the kw readout work but I can’t get it into any assistance mode (or walk mode).

I have obv restarted it, removed the battery connector for a reset.
I’ve checked the speed sensor but that’s fine as it gets a readout.
I’ve checked the cables under the display unit and they are connected.
I’ve reseated the remote cable at the remote end.

Also when holding down the display button and remote mode change button lower (it should reset after 10s) it just turns off.

I’m suspecting a dodge mode change remote or connection at this point.

Any further ideas from anyone? I’m prob making a very simple mistake somewhere 😂

I agree, it sounds like the handle bar remote is not working properly. There is a way to control it with the button on the display I think But I forgot how to activate it. it’s there in case the handle bar remote gets damaged. you could also try to change the modes on the app (either Trek or TQ app) a d download to the bike to see if that resets something.

I found how to activate that center button mode:

Using the Center Display (Requires App Setting)
If you do not have the handlebar remote or it has failed, you can enable the "extended center button functionality" via the Trek Central app or the TQ app.
  • To change power modes: With this feature enabled, a single press of the center button will change the power mode.
  • To change display screens (with feature enabled): You will then need to double-press the center button to switch between data screens (like trip distance, total odometer, etc.).

How to Enable the Feature
  1. Connect your phone to the bike using the Trek Central app.
  2. Navigate to the motor settings or display options within the app.
  3. Look for and toggle the "extended center button functionality" setting to on.
  4. If this option is not available in your app, your bike may require a firmware update, which can be done by a certified technician at a local bike shop.
 
@DBSwiss quality mate thanks. I got that up and running via the TQ app and the modes appear fine.

At least I can test the motor tomorrow and it def points to the switch / cable or connector.

You can check the torque sensor is picking up the pedal pressure I imagine. There's a display that shows rider Watts and motor Watts, I think it shows the rider pedal power even when assistance is off.

As DBSwiss suggests, sounds like the remote though.

Hope it's an easy fix!
 
My wife's bike had the same issue. The plug at the remote came loose. Good luck with your bike.
