Hey guys,

Follow-up to my intro post—I'm officially planning my transition from a 250W commuter to a high-performance eMTB. I'm torn between buying a complete bike or source components for a custom build.

Given that I want something capable for proper trails but also want to understand the tech inside out, what are your thoughts?

  • Is building an eMTB from a carbon frame/motor kit worth the effort for a beginner, or should I buy a complete bike and upgrade the specs later?
  • Any specific frames or motor kits that are community favorites for DIY projects right now?
Looking forward to your advice!

This is a bit of "If you have to ask..." question to be honest.

Buy a full bike and upgrade/change components if/when you either find something lacking or you break something.

Haha fair enough! That "if you have to ask" definitely hit the spot. 😂 I guess I was getting ahead of myself—DIYing an eMTB from scratch sounds like a massive rabbit hole and a total routing headache for a beginner. Going complete definitely makes more sense. If I'm looking for a solid factory bike that's a good platform for future upgrades, any specific specs or brands you think I should look into?
