Hi All,

After 30-odd years on two wheels—road, fixed(48~18), MTB, and plenty of touring—I’m finally joining the EMTB ranks. My knees have been grumbling for a while, and after my last MTB was nicked, the spark faded a bit. The roads around Cheshire haven’t helped either—more potholes than progress lately!

But now, with retirement on the horizon and one last go on the Bike to Work scheme, I’ve just bought a Trek Powerfly 6 Gen 5 hardtail. Had a spin on a mate’s EMTB and that was it—mojo reignited.

Pick it up Monday and can’t wait. Already eyeing up some trail rides, Lost Lanes routes, and maybe a bit of light touring again. Looking forward to being part of this forum and sharing the ride.

I'm scheduled in Dec for a THR. Thinking about getting an ebike which on one hand sounds like a ton of fun but on the other hand I'm having a hard time getting over the guilt of riding one. I was doing OK until last year but this year has been rough with my current L/R balance running about 35/65. Needless to say I've lost a lot of speed over the speed I've lost from just being old.

The sooner I can get back on the road/trail after the surgery the better and I tell myself I could ease back into cycling if I had a little electric help.

What sort of age are you?
Before my Op, I had a go on my Road Bike, no chance, I couldn’t rotate my left leg fully, so ended up pushing down on my thigh, and that hurt, I tried riding my hard tail Mountainbike, and it seemed ok, hurt a bit when out of the saddle and climbing, but manageable ..
Then a friend suggested a ebike.. well I told him were to go to start..🤣… then had a go on one, nice position, tailored it to me, stem, 40 degree bars, platform pedals for a while..
Happy Days… I’m sure it will help in recovery, and my Physio and Osteopath are giving it the thumbs up,
I’ll let ya know in 6 months, whether it’s a keeper or a EBay ..!!!!
Hope All goes well..
Listen to ya Body for recovery..
Keep in touch…💪👍

First Ride – Trek Powerfly 6 Gen 5 Hardtail

Completed a 60-mile Wirral loop from Chester, following the coast through New Brighton, West Kirby, and Parkgate.
Converted to tubeless the night before — three tough hours in the kitchen, but worth it.
Used TOUR+ and ECO outbound, switched to eMTB and TURBO for the return leg into a headwind.
Bike handled brilliantly across mixed terrain. Legs felt it, but the ride was smooth and confidence-inspiring.

Battery Stats:
- Finished with 21% remaining
- Estimated range left: 8–18 miles
- Mode breakdown:
- TURBO: 12 mi
- eMTB: 21 mi
- TOUR+: 18 mi
- ECO: 8 mi

I'm 70 with a bone-on-bone hip due to osteoarthritis. Funny thing is, I hobble around like an old man, make that a really old man is I guess (in body but not mind), but am able to ride without too much pain, at least some days. Still manage to ride 6 days a week though. Having a dropper makes getting on and off the bike so much easier when you have next to no range of motion in on hip. Want to stay in good condition up until my surgery.

Just called to order my new e-mtb and waiting for a call back from the shop owner when he is done helping a customer. Living in a smaller town with only one bike shop means driving a ways to get what you want usually. I'm going to really splurge and order a Feedback Sports Pro E bike stand too since I do all my own wrenching and don't want to have to wrestle 45-50lb bike up on a stand. My buddy has one and it is slick. 10-20 years ago I would have thought it ridiculously extravagant but age has a way of adjusting your point of view.

Got my wife a better ebike than mine and she loves it! She can ride in a full boost mode and I ride in trail and she is right on my tail and loves it. 62 btw

Hi welcome, I am 62 and recently thought I would try an eMTB , I had been telling myself for years that I would never get one of those cheating bikes! However after getting a health issue and not riding at all for a few years I thought id give it a go. I am not doing anything drastic on it (at the moment ) but to be able to ride again, get up those hills and have some fun is amazing. I have had to eat my words I am really enjoying it and doing much more than I thought I would. It is great to get part of my life back!

'but age has a way of adjusting your point of view' great observation and so true!

You’ll be ok, my surgeon said to me, thanks to cycling all the years , superb quad, glute, development, , will help recovery twice as quick.💪👍

Hi from oz, I rediscovered riding during the pandemic and purchased a Trek Rail (2023) and so far have 11000kms on it. I accidentally snapped the wheel sensor off its flimsy plastic fixing when refitting the rear wheel. The Trek dealer says it'll be a month to get a new sensor.
If I was in Europe I'd be off to get a Nikolai with pinion motor/gearbox unit driving a gates carbon fibre belt.
Us older fellows don't need to be getting down on the floor fussing with chains/derailleur/ cassette/ chainring.
You are so fortunate to be where you are geographically. The best tech is right on your doorstep!

I'm 67 and just got my first ebike. Higher spec'd that my husbands. I can leave him behind on uphills now. Thinking of getting a tow rope for him. :ROFLMAO: I have talked him into getting a new bike though - an Amflow. So I might be chasing him again soon!

That's the way to do it! Leave him in your dust. :ROFLMAO:

I am a 60 year old Cycling Guide on Mallorca!! (soon to be retired one at that!) - I have guided here for years, Road Bikes, eMTB, MTB, Gravel... I also open sea swim every day i can (mornings) - even through winter when conditions allow! Age is but a number my friends...I still get PB's..... It's all about how you live... FOOD... and generally look after yourself... You only get one shot at this life.... eh.. I'm planning on buying a Nikolai S16 MGU soon... as I am sick of derailleurs!!! To date, I have always built my own bikes.. but from 2026 on.. in my retirement... this will be the eMTB for me....
