Hi everyone,

I have a Giant Reign E+ 3 (2023 model, 800Wh battery). After connecting a computer, the motor unfortunately burned out.

I ordered and installed a new motor, but the issue is that the system still shows an error after installation.

Could you please advise:

  • Does the new motor need to be paired or programmed with the bike?
  • Is it possible to do this without a dealer? (There is no official dealer in my country.)

I’d really appreciate any help 🙏

is not needed to pair or activate the new motor, just calibration for proper assist but it won't make an error if you dont calibrate.
If even with a new motor unit the app show there is an error probably there is an issue with cable/connector or the issue is in the smart-gateway.
A good Giant retailer could check just the motor unit just using OBD and ServiceTool.
I think the best option for you is to contact a Giant dealer to send your motor and smart gateway so they can check both components, instead the complete bike.

Thank you for your reply.

Unfortunately, there are no Giant dealers in my country. I honestly don’t know what to do anymore — I’ve been dealing with this motor error for almost a year now.

I really hoped that replacing the motor would solve the problem, but the error is still there.

Am I understanding correctly that if the problem was only in the motor itself, I should have been able to remove the old motor, install the new one, and the bike would work without any additional steps?

So if the same motor error still appears even with the new motor installed, does that mean the problem is not only in the motor?

Well… I bet it’s very unlikely that the new motor unit also has a problem, since it’s new.
So, I guess the issue is coming from another component.
Can you explain what the problem is exactly?
I mean, does the bike provide assistance at least for a few meters? Does it assist at very low power levels?
Do the display or RideControl show any red LED error when you start the bike, or only during the ride?

I bought a new motor on eBay (the link is attached in my first message).
When I install this new motor, the bike immediately shows a motor error — the screenshot is also attached in the first post. The motor does not work at all and the error appears right away.

My friend has the exact same bike model. I removed the motor from his bike and installed it on mine, and everything works perfectly with his motor.

So it seems that the issue is specifically with the new motor that I bought.

That is why I would like to ask: when installing a new motor, does it need to be activated, paired, or registered somehow through a special app or software?

aah ok, now I understand...I was thinking there was an issue and you decided to buy a new motor as solution. In that case is very clear that the new motor has a problem. Was that motor brand new or it has some use?

No, is not needed to pair or to activate when you install a new motor. It will work directly after installing.
Try to claim that motor to the seller.

I bought a brand new motor (not used or refurbished).

Am I correct in understanding that a new motor does NOT need to be flashed, paired, or activated with dealer equipment before installing it on the bike?

I’m trying to figure out what’s wrong because the motor simply doesn’t work at all. However, if I install a motor from another bike, everything works perfectly.

So it really seems like the issue is with this new motor, but I don’t understand if there’s some required setup step I might be missing.

Correct, new motor doesn't need any activation to work and turn on.
Maybe that motor was damaged, or it get damaged during installation? Just to confirm, can you test that new motor in your friends bike?

What does this mean? "After connecting a computer, the motor unfortunately burned out"

How did you connect a computer to the Motor (I assume via Bluetooth) and why do you think that cause a "Burnout" ?
