Hi All,

Can anybody confirm if you can get rider power data (current watt output) from the EP801-RS system?

I bought an Orbea Rise, to answer my own question: No it does not output rider power data. Shame.

Hi @jab0rnal,

I completely agree, but I believe that the community has the power to change this. For this reason, I created an online petition that takes next to no time to sign. Please sign and help me spread the word!

You can find more information here:

Best and take care,
Marcell

@mkinal , the problem is that it probably wouldn't be very accurate. They made the decision to not include power outage for that reason. To engineer the motor, they only need to include a torque sensor, so there may not even be a power sensor in the unit.

And lastly, a petition isn't going to get you what you want. Even if they can do it. A petition has very little sway over a corporation.

If you want accurate power output, get some pedals. Other than that, it's a mountain bike, just get out and enjoy the ride. If you really care about your training sessions and FTP values, mtb probably isn't the sport to be involved with.

You're right and it might be hopeless, but I'm an optimist. I'd really appreciate if you could take a few seconds to sign, would mean a lot! :)

I've not tried it to see if it actually works, but the ETube ride app has a screen that appears to show Left and Right power. I'd got the bike in the workshop (was just checking which profile was set) and don't have any way of mounting my phone on the bike, but that suggests to me it's now a data output from the latest motor/firmware. (can't see why else it would be in the app)

@b33k34 That is probably for the Shimano power meters you can buy separately, unfortunately.

EDIT: Just tested on my Orbea Rise - no such luck. Fully up-to-date firmware and iPhone app. As I suspected it will be for the Shimano power meters. Honestly, don't hold out any hope for Shimano adding this as a feature. They really lag behind the rest of the competition now in terms of smart features.

I completely agree to this information.
Shimano has all ingredients for power measurement already because power, torque and cadence are physically related to each other and so power can be calculated by torque multiplied with cadence (easy speaking) and so it would be quite easy to calculate power from this (in theory you even can do this "by yourself" with a bike computer which is capable to read the wireless ANT+ protocol, because cadence and torque are transmitted "over the air" when riding, see e.g. in the E-Tube-Ride - App).
Ok, this calculation of the power then would be the output power of the motor and most probably you want to get the power of the rider, but that would be possible too, because you can get the assistance curves from your current mode (BASIC or FineTune - mode of the DU-EP801-RS) and so derive your own power from the motor output power.
However, this "back and forth" calculation is not a real great way and at the end not really accurate too, because the motor internal torque sensor is not designed for this purpose and so I also agree that it is much better to get some (quite expensive) "dedicated power cranks/pedals" if you are really into this measurement.

Yeah, I wish they provided this. On my 2021 Giant Trance the Synchdrive Pro motor broadcasts three sensors I can connect to with my Garmin Edge: ’ebike’ shows assist level and battery percent, ‘speed/cadence’ and ‘power’. Having that power data available lets the Garmin calculate VO2 max If you also wear a heart rate strap.
