Hello,
So today something happened inside my EP801. Sounds like something came loose inside the motor.

The motor has run less than 2000km and it ́s been ridden very lightly on easy trails as I ́ve had hip surgery and have not been able to stand up when riding. Only the last month that I ́ve been able to stand up and ride more difficult trails.

This morning after a short downhill section with some roots and bumps the motor started making this noise, like something shook loose inside. On my way home I leaned the bike over and gave it a few knocks on the motor with my hand and it stopped making the noise, but felt it had some resistance. A few hundred meters later it started making the noise again.

Anyone that has any ideas what it could have happened?

STOP riding it and investigate.
It could be something dead easy and cheap to fix, but causes damage as long as it is not fixed.
If it is still under warranty, let them deal with it.

If not, and you don't want to split the motor (I wouldn't, personally), send it to someone like these guys.

There is a motor repair guy on here, but he won't touch Shimano.

If the motor is still in warranty, Shimano probably won't replace a noisy motor that still runs, so, ride your bike as if there wouldn't be a tomorrow, so you'll get a replacement when it breaks and stops working.

If warranty has already finished, stop riding, open the motor and check it out, it could be repairable.

I've heard that the ep801 can't be opened without knowing the proper procedure - apparently Shimano added a trick to brick the motor for unwary home mechanics.

Noise is there when motor is not spinning. Check there is not something rubbing at the rear.

This hoax comes from an EP801 Tear Off video made by a Spanish mechanic, in minute 11:15 he says “In EP801 you have to make a special protocol to open it without causing an E010 error “, without giving any more detail about the “protocol", nor providing instructions about the motor tear off or how to fix issues, he is just providing some comments about the motor to motivate owners to bring the motor to them for repair, which is his main interest.

So he is not saying that the motor will brick when opening it, just that you have to be careful (probably not to pinch cables or break torque sensor flex cables in crank shaft). ” But somebody translated it as “Motor will brick when you open it”. I am Spanish, so you can trust my translation.

Ok so this is emberrasing.
Studied the video I took and noticed the chain ring stayed still when coasting so it could not be coming from the motor.

Went over the bike again and could find nothing wrong. so I moved the rear fender to just touch the rear wheel and it made the same sound sounding like the front of the motor.

Normally if the fender moves and touches the tire it stays there till I manually move it. But this time it came and went which tricked me.

Fastened the mudguard better and rode for 1h on choppy trails this morning without issues.

The EP801 is renowned for a rattle in the motor.

I think you'll find that its fine, My Bullit makes the same noise. I believe it's the 'clutch' from what I've been told.

He posted it's actually his mudguard rubbing. There's no issue with the motor.
