Planning a road trip from TX to Monarch Crest, so looking for e-bike legal single track within a 4hr drive from Salida. Any "must ride" suggestions? Considering Hartman Rocks in Gunnison and 18 Road Trails in Fruita. Also, anyone know what the "penalty" is for riding a non-legal trail? I figure if it's federal land, they can't possibly have enough workers to police the trails.

Colorado has tons of spots that are e-bike friendly although Salida is not necessarily one. I ride in Salida on a full powered bike and have had only one person bring up the fact that they aren't "allowed" in the area. The town trails do have a fair amount of signage listing e-bikes as not allowed. Most of the trails are on USFS lands and that policy applies. There is absolutely no enforcement and only 5% of riders you encounter like to tell you about the "rules". You will also find a ton of other riders on class 1's. If you are looking for places where the are explicitly allowed you should check out:
  • Denver/Boulder Front Range trials
  • Virginia Canyon/Maryland Mountain
  • All of Jefferson County Open Space trails (not Buffalo Creek)
  • Dillon Reservoir
  • Beaver Creek, Vail, and Arrowhead Mountain ski areas
  • Trestle Bike Park
  • Riffle Grand Hogback
  • Grand Junction Third Flats (not Lunch Loops)
  • Fruita (technically only 18 road and Rabbit Valley) but Loma and Mack are busy with class 1's
  • Crested Butte has a bunch of trails that are "motorized" Teocalli Ridge, Double Top, Deadman's and others in Brush and Cement Creek
  • Gunnison

Vail ski area allows ebikes? Good to know. I hear that Staunton State Park does as well...that is a good one maybe 30-40 mins away from Denver.

Vail, BC, Bachelor Gulch, and Arrowhead all allow within the Special Use Permit areas. Mill Creek and Two Elk are outside the permit area but.....oh well

This is helpful! Any suggestions for fun ebike routes in the Beaver Creek Arrowhead area, or somewhat nearby there?

Start in AH and climb Dakota to Ute. Once you reach the road, climb up to the bridge (Everkrisp ski run). Just beyond the bridge take a right and follow to Bambi to Deerhorn (there has been a name change for a few trails to Moose but they are still Bambi and Deerhorn on Trailforks). Follow these to Elkhorn and turn around and come back to AH the way you came but take a left on Apache to descend back to AH base.
