DIY Carbon rim wheelset - BTLOS M-i30AS and ZTTO M1 hub

This time I decided to try 29" carbon rims. Bought pair of shallow BTLOS M-i30AS rims. Rims are in enduro version (a bit heavier than XC and AM finish). To make long story short, all the details bellow.

BOM:
-2x BTLOS M-i30AS carbon rims (enduro version)
-set of ZTTO M1 hubs
-60pcs D-light sapim spokes - all 306mm long
-one pack (70pcs) of Newmen MG washers
-60 bras Sapim nipples

At first bit of the math. Rim ERD is 602mm but we have to add 4mm to it (2x MG washer) to make calculations right.

I have ordered all spokes 306mm long. Now the fun part, lacing the wheels.

Lacing straight pull hubs is extremely easy, took about 20 minutes a wheel. Truing process next 30 minutes a wheel.

Final result bellow.

Weight of the ready to go enduro wheels ended up at about 1690 grams.
The costs:
Rims 422Eur
Spokes + nipples 80Eur
MG washers 7Eur
Set of M1 hubs 80Eur

Total 589Eur

The wheelset could be a bit lighter, using aluminium nipples, rims in XC or AM finish could result in about 1500 grams. The weight is not the priority for me. Stronger enduro wheels are more preferable.

Now, the question is, is it worth of spending extra money on carbon rims ? Simply I do not know, but I am going to find out.....

I think I can see it’s the centerlock version, so ratchet version?
I have a 6 bolt with 6 pawl version and one pawl failed after 500km… they sent me a new one under warranty but I have no idea how to lace new wheels!
I’d like to give it a try but the spokes lenght calculation is still not clear for me :D

Yes, I have used this time ratchet version. Previously with ''alloy build'' wheels I have used 6-bolt pawl version.
M1 hub with pawl's done about 800km no problem. Opened just once after about 500km for inspection, cleaned + regreased.

Spoke calculation is easy - just putt the values into the calculator. Lacing the wheels is easy too, do 7 spokes on one side, swap sides, do another 7 spokes, turn it over do another 7 than turn it over last time and last 7 spokes.

Hi, Any updates on the wheels? thinking of getting the same wheels with the bitex hubs. Is this the gloss UD version?

I am smashing them every weekend. All OK. The only thing I would consider in my case is the rear spokes. I weight about 100km geared up. There is a bit of lateral flex which I like but if I will put 2.6'' tire on the back, it starts to rub on the back swing arm. Must say that I am agrresive rider. So in my case i stay with 2,4'' tire on the back. With 1.8mm gauge spokes the rear wheel might be a bit stiffer but less complient.

I have gloss version. You can order the rims in all mountain and Enduro finish, my ones are heavier Enduro.

Thankyou for the update. I’m 88kg kitted, and thinking of going with d-light spokes. Think you may have persuaded me to get these over alloy rims!

The alloy rim wheels with newmen a30 sl rims are also a good option (about the same weight) Light and strong, done about 1800km on my lce930.

Regardles ztto m1 hub, had to replace bearings in freehub body after about 1500km. Other than that all OK.
 
What made you choose those ztto m1 hubs?

I've seen couple people in this forum ride Koozer Xm490 Pro hubs and I bought them for myself with SunRingle Duroc 35 rims and so far they feel awesome. Pre-built set from Aliexpress.

I wonder how these compere to @Denver 's wheels he ordered from LightCarbon. I think his wheels weight 900g+1100g and cost around 400€. Link to his build. Assembly frame LightCarbon LCE971 bafang M510 (By Denver)

Ztto m1 is a copy of dt 240 hub. The main advantage is they are well sealed, which is very important in Ireland.

I bought some koozer's to. Got 450 hub set with 120poe. I just can not decide which rims to use for next build.
Either Ex511 or the new newmen 30 performance, they are rated up to 180kg.

Hello, can I ask you any update about the rims after one year from last message? I'm in doubt if going with shallow versions M-i30AS or not, Amy from Btlos support told me that it's not suited for ebike use because less resistant than M-i30A (non shallow).
I weight about 74 kg and I'm considering making my build with DT 350 straight pull hubs and 28 Sapim race spokes, but I'm concerned that this wheel build could be too stiff and not so compliant.

It all depends what is Your riding style. Italy is full of nice places with high mountains and big rocks. Shallow versions for trail riding will be IMHO OK. I have ordered the heavier and stronger AM versions of AS rims.
Ask Yourself what type of trails those wheels will be used for.
My weight is about 92kG + gear and the rims survived trail riding. I didn't try them on enduro stuff yet, as my riding is a bit hard.

Thank you for your answer, anyway I ended ordering the NON shallow premium EN version laced with 28h hubs, let's hope they will be fine and not too stiff compared to my e-deemax

I bought these:

I have the shallow version and dh. They are still very stiff, compared to my stans flow mk4. They have been holding up fine for the whole summer. I have koozer 450 hubs and Sapim race spokes. I wanted steel rear axle for e-bike, since I have broken two dt-swiss alu axles already.

Just wanted to chime in and confirm these wheels are great. I'm also running BTLOS i30 asyms on ZTTO M1s, and they are my favorite wheelset for sure. Ive had them on my 160/160 acoustic enduro bike and theyve held up to anything my old age bones are willing to throw at them (rocks, roots, up to 5ft drops, etc), especially considering I'm 225+ lbs (100+ kg) without gear. While I have upgraded the original 36t ratchet to a true DT swiss 54t, the original never gave me any troubles, and lives on in my SS wheelset.

I wouldnt hesitate to build another set of these wheels, but I have so many bikes at this point, ive been experimenting with even more budget friendly wheel builds for rarely used bikes.

But glad to see someone else having luck with their BTLOS/ZTTO wheelset!

Ztto M1 is less pronounced than koozer 120hd hub. In my opinion the koozer (450 straight pull) hub is more robust and overall better quality than ztto M1.

That is true, but you can just add and retract that from the flange distances. Or even if you just ignore it completely it will give you correct spoke length within one millimeter and that is still enough.
