Very same from Westhill I believe.

Yup, used to work with him around 15 years ago. Still occasionally keep in touch. Just spoke to him earlier this week to arrange a ride at Kirkhill once it dries up a bit.

Not in Dubai by any chance. I know him through Richard in Buckie

Before he went to Dubai. I knew of Richard, used to have a bike shop of sorts? Or basically a way of getting trade price stuff for him and his mates from what I could gather 😄

Small world indeed. Good to know he's still on the go.

I'm looking forward to getting out with Simon. It's been years!

Another sad loss, Saddleback have gone into administration. They distributed Pivot & Cannondale in the UK. Buyer beware but there are some hefty discounts on their website right now.

Edit - looks like everyone has been made redundant, probably best to avoid. Soz.

Not too mucky considering it hasn't been opened till yesterday . On its way to motor graveyard 2214 miles . Managed to round off the crank allen bolt so hopefully dealer gets it off and just that wee bit can be replaced and not a whole praxis crank required.

(Cross-posted from the "what did you buy" thread)

Amazon have a deal on the Park Tool PCS-9.3 - Home Mechanic Repair Stand, One Size,Blue at the moment (in the UK, though it might also be available across the pond too).

£117.99 (normally £138.85, and sometimes more).

(Is there a forum area for posting deals? I couldn't see one but notice people post deals in this thread.)

Taya E-Tolve 12 speed, 136 link ebike rated chain, £9.99 including free delivery with code 'TayaChainFree'

Not sure how good these are but a quick Google suggests Taya have been making chains for 50 years, although reviews of their other chains seem mixed. Anyway these are a tenner so I've ordered a couple to try!

Chains are one bike part where it pays to spend more, ideally as much as you can afford. The only 12 speed SRAM chain I haven't tried is the XX and without fail, each step up the range resulted in better shifting and longer life. The NX chain was the worst shifting chain I have ever used, to the point that I questioned whether it was actually new (given it as a spare)

Noted & for my emtb I do only fit more reputable chains. These are going on non-ebikes so I'll see how they do in that application. I (hope!) it'll be a while before I can comment on their longevity but I'll at least report how well they shift, asap.

The more expensive chains are longer lasting overall but not as cost efficient per mile as the cheaper ones, at least with shimano. Also there's no difference in shifting performance - the plates are identical in shape

In case of SRAM. That might not be considering need to also replace the cassette that might be worn out by the chain?

Shimano is tighter across the range on performance vs price, especially with the 11spd Linkglide chain being their strongest.

Sram on the other hand is miles ahead on their hardchrome'd XX1 & X01, both perform the same but the XX1 gets sexy colours. GX = $50, X01 = $90 & XX1 = $110.
The X01/XX1 will last 2-3 times longer than a GX and don't look like crap after a few rides. The GX level and below, along with the cheaper Shimano chains (including Linkglide) will rust very quickly and look terrible.

I've killed a GX chain in 500km, including destroying the cassette on my Ibis (stock parts). Keeping an eye on a lower end chain before it costs you a cassette and a chainring can be very fast. Double the cost, at least double the distance and double the time before changing it out + you get the nice rust free look for the duration. Well worth going the premium end for chains IMO.

I usually run XX1 in a nice rainbow or gold but picked up 3 x X01 chains last buy for €40 each... same performance, just silver.

You MUST (not should!) replace the chain before it hits the wear point that harm the cassette.
You can extend drivetrain life by rotating several chains before they wear. I do bi-monthly but depends on how much you ride, obvi

I know that chains can be rotated to extend drivetrain lifetime. But if you consider using one chain only the cassette will last much longer with a X0 or XX chain than with a GX or NX (worst case). Think that was the point of discussion. 🤔

During lockdown I got over 1800 miles out of a chain before it snapped. It was mostly Quicklinks when I eventually changed it (and the cassette and chain ring) at over 2200 miles. The last time it snapped the chain just crumbled like a mummy in an old horror movie every time I tried to use a chain tool on it. :ROFLMAO:

I am running a full Sram NX set on my bike cassette chain rear mech and 12 speed shifter and everything runs smoothly, The chain is new and only been fitted just over a week and I have had no problems yet. I have just been reading the posts on here and some riders are saying Sram NX is the worst setup so this has me thinking and I would like to know why it is getting bad reviews from some of you.
