Anyone know the reason for this click/clunk before motor engagement?

It's backlash in the gears, no one likes it, normal for Bosch.

So nothing is broken or in the process of breaking, i just didn't notice before?

Is that also what causes the "chainslap that isn't actually chainslap" when going down rugged downhill?

No also no.

Chain slap is just a part of mountain bike drive trains. But check your clutch is on if it's Shimano. SRAM clutches are always on by default.
