Bulge in the bead - reuse, fit a tube or replace?

Hi All.

As shown in the pic, a portion of the bead on my rear tyre has parted from the rim. It's a Maxxis Ardent Race 27.5 x 2.20. It's very annoying because the tyre is only a few months old.

Last time out on the trail, I knew the rear tyre made made contact with the stub of a tree root and I felt lucky I didn't get a flat then. There was no obvious damage. I've then used the bike to commute around 60km and it went flat overnight.

I'll take the tyre off to have a good look for damage. But if it is undamaged, is it likely to be weakened to the point where it should not be run tubeless any more?

The other options would be to run a tube, or just replace the tyre.

Good advice appreciated.

Can anyone suggest a replacement for an Ardent Race?

I'm amazed that you're able to ride anywhere on an Ardent Race in the winter!

I love mine in the summer but winter for me was basically just wheelspinning on the spot and then falling off sideways.

If you like the tyre, go for the same. I think you've been unlucky with the tree thing and it's not necessarily down to the tyre.

Ardent Race 2.20 29 comes in a 120 or 60 tpi casing, the 60 being a little heavier and more durable.

@brw0513 Yep, it's goosed alright!

Make a warranty claim and you should have no problem. In my pre-emtb days, I had two Continental Trail King tyres 27.5 x 2.2 that had bead failure one after the other at the same mileage and in almost the exact same place on the tyre. It was a manufacturing defect. I loved the tyres and I kept buying and never had another problem.
I contacted the supplier and sent a photo along with proof of purchase, no problem. They gave me a refund because they had no more stock. I bought the replacement from a supplier in a different country so I thought I would be avoiding the same production batch. No such and the second tyre failed in the same way etc. That 2nd suppler also gave me no problem but this time replaced the tyre. No more problems.

Ohh I linked 29r’s i see you have 27.5…

Looking at the split i would bet that the edge profile of your rim played its part in splitting the bead from the casing.

I will go back to the bike store where I purchased the tyre and see what they can offer. I didn't keep the receipt though

My front tyre is a Maxxis Forekaster 27.5x2.35. I was running that at 22 psi and the Ardent Race 27.5x2.2 at 25psi. I'm not a great rider, and my mates on the regular MTBs beat me almost everywhere. But I liked this tyre combination for my ability since the rear seemed to give me some warning things were getting loose but I never felt that way about the front.

Based on research on this Forum, a Maxxis Minion Semi Slick 27.5x2.3 should also suit my riding.
