See on this possibility.
Gen5 motor in old gen2 frames.
If you asked me about install gen5 motor in gen4 frames - is not possible
Gen5 motor is too long
To make G2-G5 modification you need adapters and change battery / wires / controller to smart system.
I installed gen5 motor in my 2019 Trek Powerfly 9.9 LT carbon.

That's a very interesting post. I asked the question some time ago here swap gen 4 motor for gen 5?

Lots of other people were interested, and the general consensus was that it should be fairly easy to fabricate a revised set of fitting plates to mount the gen 5 into the old frame. But the issues were that - as you say - you also need to replace the battery and charger, wiring and electronics for the pre-smart systems of the gen 2 Rails. That's a lot of extra expense!

Did you have any trouble sourcing your new motor and controller etc, and did you have any issues with any Bosch anti-tamper controls (eg matching electronic IDs of the new components)?

Change Battery / controller / wires are very easy.
The Biggest challenge is with fit long g5 motor into small g4 frame housing and make nice printed covers for this. Gen2 is big motor - so is much easier.
