Hi,
Is it true the maximum gear ratios, i.e., the smallest and largest gears, are filed in the drive system?

Is it possible for LBS to enter the number of teeth for each individual sprocket on the cassette with a derailleur?

The problem is caused by installing a larger chainring, because the crank speed decreases in the respective sprockets, as well as in the largest and smallest overall gear ratios apparently.

I don’t think it’s possible or necessary to reprogram the chain speed if a chainring size is changed. I think alignment and clearance would be important.

My bike(s) came with 34t charging(s). That’s fine for me but others may want a larger or smaller chainring. I’ve installed an ethirteen 34t on my Bosch gen4. The clearance was ok but the alignment wasn’t. I had to remove a brass “O” ring to get proper alignment because of the shape of the ethirteen chainring.

I was not concerned with the cadence but I changed the 34t with a 34t so rpm and chain speed remained the same. The sensors for the wheel or Bosch motor probably don’t care 🤷🏼‍♂️. I’m not really sure for the new smart-bikes.

I have been riding with a bigger chainwheel for 2 years. When recently I replaced chain and sprockets I went up 2 more teeth on the chainwheel. This, I have been told, has caused an algorithm to be exceeded and a 504.

Hmmm, I didn’t know that was possible. I would think that the changes in chain speed, because of a 12speed cassette, would have no effect on the algorithm for the motor/wheel sensor. I’ve never had a 504 btw.

I wonder if it’s because of the change in torque? I know some others have changed chainring sizes. Maybe they could comment?

I believe its the relationship between wheel speed and cadence which triggers the error, but it appears it can be re-programmed by LBS. Going to a larger front chain ring on a gen 4 motor "LBS said NO ISSUES at all changing from a 36T chain ring to a 38T chain ring but a 40T may be an issue {but he thought not} and a 42 would/should definitely need the diagnostics run, and the gear ratios reprogrammed AND this he said was EASILY DOABLE!!!"

Other posts on here said that the chainring size can be changed in the Diagnostic software by LBS. However my LBS tried to do this but failed because, in its infinite wisdom, Bosch no longer include this option on their latest diagnostic software update. We have been told by Bosch to contact the bike manufacturer for support on this!

I went from a 34t chainring to a 36t as it is indicated by the chain guide and have not had any problems, I didn't know about the change to torque in the motor. My bike is having its first service now and I will ask the mechanic if anything came up when he did the diagnostic.

Saga continues, Cube refused to change the programming (Via LBS) to suit a 44 chainwheel, the V3 Bosch software (latest)does not permit change of Chainwheel size or gear ratio changes. I was told the old software does allow this, but having found an LBS with V3 and V2 I can confirm that its still not possible on V2. They posed the question that maybe V1 can do it, however finding an LBS with V1 is unlikely. Does anyone on here know of an LBS with a working copy of V1 in the West country?

As far as i know, you can't change the gear ratios like that, you need a specific container file made by a manufacturer (like cube etc...) and upload that to the bike.

How long you have to ride before the 504 error comes up?

1.As you can see above, I requested a file but they refused.
2.A few hundred miles I think, I wasn't paying attention I'm afraid.

If it's few hundred miles, jut use it, and delete the error when it comes up.

To delete the error I would need the Bosch Software or a visit to the LBS every time.

I went from 38t to 34t on my Cube Stereo and got errors when I shifted to the largest rear sprocket.
