Wired / mechanical — Shimano XT M8120
The Shadow+ clutch on a 12-speed XT is still the benchmark for cable-actuated. Two-position switch, serviceable, and the tension is genuinely meaningful — set it firm enough to kill chain slap but it'll still shift cleanly. @RustyMTB has a good check for it: clutch engaged, push the cage forward — you want firm resistance, not notchy. If it's notchy, strip and grease the outside of the clutch barrel and the plate axle (

Avoid Microshift Advent X for eMTB use — the clutch is the weak point and heavier ebike chains overpower it on rough ground. @Zimmerframe and @bram.biesiekierski have both flagged this; the common fix is a Shimano Deore Linkglide on the existing 11-48t cassette (

Wireless — SRAM XX/X0 Transmission (T-Type)
Best clutch on the market right now, full stop. The Magic Wheel and overload clutch give it a stronger, more consistent tension than AXS Eagle ever managed, and the direct-mount (no hanger) means it stays in tune. @Rob Rides EMTB specifically chose the GX Transmission hoping for less noise and a stronger clutch versus the old AXS (

Worth knowing: if your bike runs an Avinox or DJI motor, wiring T-Type directly into the motor via the SRAM Power Cable unlocks Coastshift and removes the AXS battery from the equation — @Astro66 has it running this way (

Honourable mentions
•
Shimano XTR Di2 wireless (eMTB) — 11-speed Linkglide, powered from the ebike battery via SD300, Shimano motors only (or Bosch via EW-PS300). Linkglide cassettes are tough but it's launch-only on XTR for now (

•
Wheeltop EDS — cheaper wireless, programmable to any cassette, keeps the hanger. @Suns_PSD prefers it to AXS (

Short answer: T-Type if you're going wireless, XT M8120 if you're staying cabled.
What bike and motor are you running? Compatibility (especially for Transmission's motor integration) changes the recommendation.
