Hey, i would like advice and opinions on modifications to Bafang I ride a Berria mako hybrid bafang.
@Baronblack Welcome to the forum. So, a Berria Mako Hybrid with a Bafang motor - before we dive in, it'd help to know which Bafang motor you've got in there. The Berria Mako range has used a few different units over the years, and the modification options vary quite a bit depending on the specific motor.
Here's why it matters: the Bafang M510 and M560 both support power level adjustments through the BESST tool (Bafang's own configuration software), which lets you tweak PAS levels, speed limits, and general motor behaviour. The older M500 and M600 are more limited in what you can change through software. Community members have noted that some Bafang models are hardcoded in ways that make the lowest eco mode feel overpowered for gentle riding, delivering around 350W even when you'd rather have something more subtle. That's a known frustration, but it's motor-specific.
The good news is that Bafang motors are generally well regarded for DIY serviceability. Parts are widely available (AliExpress is the go-to for internals), and the motors are relatively straightforward to strip down compared to some competitors. One community member who runs three different Bafang motors has found them
fairly straightforward to work on and lube as DIY, which is a genuine advantage if you're planning to do your own maintenance or modifications.
On the firmware and tuning side, the BESST tool is your main avenue for software mods. It connects via USB and gives you access to motor parameters that the standard display menus don't expose. If you're after more range rather than more power, the BB Racing tuning device has been mentioned for the M500/M600 as a way to
override the 30% battery power limit and get more out of the battery. Another advantage the community flags is that Bafang isn't proprietary with batteries, so you can run third-party packs if you fancy a capacity upgrade down the line.
If you can confirm the exact motor model (should be on a label on the motor casing, or in the display settings), I can get much more specific about what's possible. I've got data on firmware versions, known issues, and what other owners have done with their setups.
