Hi there I have recently taken delivery of an Avinox powered bike from a dealer in the UK. At the point of delivery delivery there has been 3 speed limit options 15/20/28mph. The bike has been returned to the merchant due to some other issues but they are saying I have speed manipulated the bike and are threatening to charge me for things. My question is, when a bike is PDI'd by a supplying dealer especially in the UK do the dealers set the location? Or would this suggest that the bike hasn't been set up correctly before being sent to me?

For context, the bike was paired to my app using normal WiFi, no VPN etc

Surely the PDI should have picked that up its not your fault :(

I thought it was illegal to sell a non compliant pedelec in the uk from a dealer / company .
This is what I have said to him. I got a replacement yesterday from another shop and there was no option to increase the speed limit from the initial turn in which is correct. He's basically trying to say I'll need to pay to rectify as he can see it's set to US.

Horrible place/guy to deal with. Cyclomonster in derby had the bike pdi'd and ready for me to collect within the hour. Great service

The location is set when you pair the bike to a phone. So it's not normal for the dealer to set the location, otherwise the bike would be paired to the dealers phone.

If you have paired your bike to your phone. Then no matter what anyone did previously, it's location came from your phone.

Now if you are saying you didn't knowingly change your phone's IP location. Then there must be something in your phone that is routing your IP through the US. So technically, it is still your fault. But if you can show the dealer that your phone is the problem, and it wasn't intentional. You may be able to get some sympathy.

My only other question would be. How long did you have the paired to the US, before you took it to the shop, because Avinox will know ? And if it's a substantial time. They may not be so sympathetic.

A Long shot. I have seen this once working in IT. A Senior Manager got blocked on his home connection from our system. Why? His IP address was registered in the US, despite him being in the UK. It was leased (cheap ISPs don't care where the IP addresses are registered as long as they work) by his ISP for use here... and geo-location of the IP was linked to US or at least was at the time, which was blocked as a region on our system. Worth checking to see if your IP address from your mobile operator is correctly geo-mapped to the UK. Minor chance this was the cause but worth checking.

There's nothing on my phone to change the location to the US, the replacement bike that arrived yesterday there was no option to change the speed (rightly so) so it's not my phone that's an issue certainly not that would change from bike to bike? The dealer requested it back and only found then that it was set to the US. He has refunded my but now saying he's trying to reverse it.

Bike was delivered on the 12th and returned on the 15th. The reason for return was nothing to do with the motor etc

Wait a second. Who is trying to charge you?? The dealer or the bike company? What bike company?

I've not heard anything since but was the dealer, for reasons of it does go further I'd rather not mention who at this point

Bro I’d return bike and find a new dealer. Tell them to screw off. That’s crazy. Your dealer should have your back not threaten legal action against you.

That's what I've done and think that's what caused it 😂

New bikes here with relevant speed setting from factory and all bolts tight. A far cry from the last one 😂
