I'd avoid the Shimano motor as they're prone to going bang. Other alternatives are Mondraker Crafty or Chaser Lapierre overvolt 7.8 or 7.7 I'd also be looking at the Orbea Wild ST

It's a low torque figure but it might be fine for them plus you can add a range extender as well if needs be. There aren't many other options under their budget really. If it were me personally, I'd be all of over the Mondraker Sly R.

Fast forward to about 5 mins in and it shows just how powerful the SX motor is in comparison to a non emtb bike.

The Mondraker sly r looks a brilliant bike at under 4k, Bosch SX motor and just under 21kg in weight, 160/150mm travel front and rear.

Is the Bosch SX as powerful as they say? I'm not a massively fit person but I'm put off by the idea of a heavier full fat bike and the SX motor appeals a lot more.

I don't own an EMTB and I'm in a similar situation as yourself. I have however done a lot of work reading and research on SL. To me the Motor in the TQ isn't powerful enough unless you're extremely fit. If it were me I'd be going Bosch SX and something like the Mondraker Sly R or the Marin Rift...

I've read the opposite. Lots of reports of motors breaking mid-ride and needing restarting, poor after care from Shimano dealerships as well.

Lovely bikes but the Shimano motor puts me off. Have read some horror stories about them which is a shame as I really like Orbea bikes as well.
