I have an Orbea Rise with 2000miles on it. The EP8 has never missed a beat for me and so far I'd definitely buy another EP8 bike. Keeping water especially hoses or jet washes away from your motors is critical no matter what brand motor you choose.

Just a thought. Have you got you flip chip thingy on the frame set to high or low?
Also, I would have thought that you would be able to get some compatible shorter cranks from a reputable online supplier if your LBS can't help.

1200 trouble free miles so far on my Orbea Rise. General trails with a few jumps etc. I'm hoping that the detuned EP8 RS will last longer than a standard tune because it's not working as hard but who knows.
Out of interest how quickly / easily did you manage to get replacement motors...
