Beware of update!

Chain tensioner doesn't bother me.
Honestly rarely hear as I'm focus on the tails I ride that are very difficult at times. I like that I have instant drive when I pedal when it is engaged. My 2 cents

For climbing, I use eMTB+ mode with +10 Extended Boost and a chain tensioner is excellent for instant engagement. For descending, I use Turbo mode with no Extended Boost, and there is no chain tensioner. Everything works fine
So no chain tensioning in turbo?

It's really good for the harder techy style climbs, or absolute power out of corners etc.
I will use it for the racing during summer.

I Dont normally have MTB+ in my custom modes as it surges alot, but will do for the racing times.
If you dont like it, dont use EMTB.. seems pretty simple?
After messing about yesterday with modes, I think this pretty much sums it up.

I assume these updates you have to perform rather than being automatic ? I've got the Rail with the non-digital display and have only connected it once to the Flow app, so have no idea what versions of FW etc i've got . But i don't see any reason i'd update it myself based upon this.

Yes, you have to actually go to the app and download the update. But, that means you probably haven't done the previous update, which increases the torque?

All working fine.
Maybe noise of chain tension makes people a bit nervous, but I didn't found any issues in functionality and battery consuption.
I see no problem.
In future, Bosch will provide option to disable this option for that who hate it 😉

I find the chain tensioning noise kind of comical, and maybe just a bit distracting.
Like I'll be just starting down a descent, and hear all of that spinning going on down there, and laugh to myself that it is overthinking things. And question if I'm not thinking enough about it?:ROFLMAO:

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but how is the chain pre-tension function supposed to work, conceptually? If you are coasting on a descent, wouldn't the pre-tension function just continually rotate the drivetrain? I can see how it could be helpful if one is at a dead stop and trying to get restarted on a technical uphill, as it would engage the hub ratchet and make the drive once you apply pedal force more instant, but if rolling already, I don't see how the pre-tensioner has anything to engage "against" unless you have a ton of friction in your freehub.

I believe the next update will make the chain tensioner switchable offable?

Yeah, after some hours on it, ill be switching off the tensioner too when ever that update comes. It doesnt add value to my riding and must be using battery when I dont want battery usage. Also it might increase the chance of derraileur tearing off if a stick picks up while its tensioning forward?

I get it if it tensions once or twice on the same descend that will put the chainring in optimal position, but if you still haven't peddled, it doesn't need to tension 22 more times before you pedal again. That's the glaring issue I see. I've solved the annoyance by riding in Turbo on technical descends with limited seated peddling.

I have no insider knowledge, just my intuition. I believe the chain tensioner addition is for those running an ochain or a sidekick hub or some other device that introduces 'play' into the drive system. The idea would be to 'sense' that the rider is about to pedal, so automatically remove that play and allow the pedals to deliver drive to the wheel straight away.
I don't have anything like this on my bike yet, so I see very little benefit for me right now. I have pedaled backwards to enable it to change gear while rolling without providing power, but I normally do exactly this just by spinning forwards slowly.
My freewheel hub is almost silent, so I would turn it off, just to remove the motor one way noise.

Same, It's actually a significant upgrade in overall performance.

I still can't figure out the logic of when it activates. I think it knows when your speed is changing because on total flats it doesn't occur for me.

It also absolutely changes gears as needed when you have preselected.

To me it seems to activate whenever the pedals are moved in relation to the motor, forwards or backwards. I can increase or decrease speed without activation, but as soon as a move my feet, it starts.
