Meet at 10:30 am ready-to-ride, Sun 28th Jun by the right side of the cafe veranda, overlooking the big field.

If you plan on coming please let me know. I need to manage numbers. I had 19 turn up once and it was like herding cats!

Lots of new stuff since the last Rideout!

The postcode for Sherwood Pines is NG21 9JL, but ignore the sat nav when you turn off the public road and just follow the signs for the car park.

Unless you ride in, your reg no will be scanned on the way in and you pay at the pay station before you leave (expect to pay £12.50). Don't forget or you will get stopped at the barrier, get blocked in and have to walk all the way back to pay! (And then back again).

Expect 19-20 miles if we do all that I have planned (plus any sessioning). That distance can be shortened by popular request on the day.

The route is different to previous rides although some sections will be common. The majority of the toughest obstacles are avoidable, the jumps are all roll-able if you prefer. If you don't fancy even the alternative route then do what I did at first, walk the bike down (or up) the worst bits! Usually, the camaraderie of supportive riding buddies gives everyone a skills boost! If you are comfortable with a red trail anywhere then you will be OK.

Expect some of the best parts of the red & blue trails, plus the WW1 trenches area and many of the off-piste trails in the area. We will also be heading over to the NCB land for some single-track trails over there. In amongst that lot, we will be riding over the biggest hill in the area to visit Vicar Water park which will be about half way around. We won't be doing the desert this time.

For those of you who have already been to Pines and only done the regular blue and red trails, you won't see much you recognise.

Because it is that time of year there is a lot of brambles, gorse, nettles and bracken. Most of the really bad stuff has been cleared, but it does grow quickly! If you bring bare legs, expect to collect some nettle stings at least.

Eyewear is strongly recommended, helmets mandatory; there are a lot of low hanging branches. If you have ridden the red at Pines before but are nervous about the thought of "going off-piste" then don't be. I stop at the trickier sections to let riders have a look at it first, until I get the feeling for the skill level of the individuals. But in the end the choice is yours whether you tackle any particular feature. I am not professional guide and I am not charging for my time, this is meant to be a fun day out.

There is a lot of shattered wood about, plus the brambles and gorse. Those without tubeless tyres and sealant, come prepared.

I have done quite a few of these rideouts in the Pines and surrounding area and judging by the feedback, they have always been good fun. Allow 4 hours as there is always a lot of piss-taking and general chit- chat taking place. Search in the Rideouts section for Sherwood Pines under @steve_sordy for all the previous outings.

There is a full-service bike shop on site, plus café and a very good toilet block, loads of parking available.

If more than 6 riders turn up, there will be frequent headcounts.

Please trust me on this; if you get lost in the off-piste areas, there is a good chance that you will have to find your own way back. Those who are not lost will have to decide how long to spend looking for you. So follow the trail instructions, and be nice to everyone you meet!

Might be the £12.50 parking.
It shouldn’t be. If you can afford several thousand pounds to buy an emtb , then you should be able to afford the parking fee which goes to help run and maintain the forest, not into someone’s pocket.
I’m on holiday so can’t do this one but I went on one a few years ago and it was a good day out, enjoyed by all. There were a couple of bits that I didn’t fancy but was able to ride around them no problem.

I understand that £12.50 is a big chunk of discretionary money, when you can ride all over Scotland for free. In acknowledgement of this I once provided a few places where riders could park for free (easily found if you look). One of the rangers at Pines reacted not too favourably. He is a good bloke and I like him, he does a lot for biking at Pines. He is a very keen and competitive rider himself, he has emtbs and as well as mtbs. He pointed out that all the trails were built at a cost and are maintained at a cost. After storms that drop trees all over the trails, his team are out clearing them as soon as the storm is over. He works hard to chisel money out of Forest England to pay for upgrades to the trails. Extra banking, more drainage, new trail extensions; the result speak for themselves. Sherwood Pines has been transformed for mtb very much for the better since I started to ride there and much of that is down to him and his team. Bearing in mind that planting and harvesting trees is the main purpose of Forest England, NOT providing riding trails for us, then pretty much any sort of activity that is not tree-oriented has to pay its way. Personally, I think £12.50 is steep, I mean Dalby Forest is only £9, which looks great value. But we are where we are. Despite the parking charges (and it is lower for shorter visits), the place is always well used and popular. As always, people vote with their wallet. The point that @billwarwick makes is well made.

I made a point of mentioning the £12.50, because that is the charge that car users will pay (per car) for the likely time that they will be there for this ride. I didn't want it to be a surprise.

Good on you Steve for arranging this, I’ve not been to Pines for years (as you know) and I couldn’t make your last organised ride due to work and family commitments.

Unfortunately, I can’t make this next one either, it’s my birthday that weekend and so have other plans.

I will get on one though if you do more, need to explore the place! 👍

I am there frequently enough to have bought a parking pass, so let me know when you want to go. I'm sure that we can sort something out.

It was a joke. Perhaps I should have put a smiley emoji after it. However Forest Scotland (e.g. Glentress etc.) is not free but it’s only £6 per full day. I thought you knew me better Steve.

Sounds good and thanks for organising, but just too far to travel.

Car park charges can be a bit Marmite (especially in the Lakes). I'm quite happy paying for my days parking as I know that the funds go into maintaining trails, footpaths, etc. One of my biggest annoyances is going to Whinlatter forest park and seeing dozens of cars parked (illegally) by the roadside and the smirking MTB'ers who think they have beaten the system by not paying for parking. Thankfully, Park Authority is cracking down on illegal / bad parking in general and there are now double yellow lines on the roads either side of Whinlater - doesn't look great but stops most of the bad parking.

I was at Whinlatter on Sunday, my first time there. Absolutely happy to pay the parking charge to go towards a facility I will use. I cannot fathom the logic or downright entitlement of some people who try to dodge parking fees when they are depriving the very facility they are using of funds to go towards the upkeep of that facility. It’s not like MTB/eMTB is a cheap sport anyway, but seeing £60k T5s parked to avoid a parking fee for a day of entertainment that is less than a pair of brake pads is insane.

I do know you well John, but others on here don't know that. It was a good point, and worth an answer. :)
