Mudguards. Unless you go full commuter, they don't really work.

Tyres: Grip: Often as not is illusory but marketing is rampant. The existence of berms proves the thesis.

Derailleurs: Ancient relics that should be consigned to the dustbin of history. The only vehicles in production to have their transmission bits on the outside.

As @VWturbobling says, I like a front guard, I find it hugely limits crap in the eyes and mouth !

The shorter rear guards help keep the shock and motor area drier and slightly cleaner.

Let's face it, asthetics are important for a large proportion of EMTBers. The rear guards that work look sh1t. So for me, one only goes on when absolutely necessary and it's not been on for 5 years, so I'm obviously more vane than dry sensible.
 
Oops, tyres - depends a lot on the conditions/surface type. For general riding, yes, makes not much difference in the scheme of things.

Derailleurs , should be banned because no one can spell it, even though they work well, are simple, light weight and reasonably robust considering what we do to them !!
