BDU374Y Newton Meter and Peak Power Upgrade call-out to Bosch (Give The People What They Want)

Me and many other people want 100NM and 750WATT upgrade to GEN 4 (BDU374Y) CX SMART systems.
We've made a change.org petition (see link https://www.change.org/p/100nm-750w-to-gen-4-systems)

We think Bosch GEN 4 CX SMART models which got introduced in 2022* are capable of the Upgrade (or at least some performance upgrade in terms of Newton Meters and Peak Watts)

I've spoken to Bosch Dnyo testers and developers and they (including me) think the Drive Unit can have the increased power, and that it is rather a choice of Bosch to update it or not. You can check on Reddit of our discussion about the Upgrade.

If the Gen 4 is capable, yes, they should should update it. That being said, I rarely use the full boost 85nm on my Shimano EP8. I ride tech singletrack uphill and don't have shuttle style forest service road climbs that lead to singletrack descents.

Good luck changing the Germans minds......

Tech climbing is where the emtb+ and more power shines. You get less wheel spin and more speed to clean difficult sections.

i've looked at videos of your "black" trails around auburn

There are a few tech trails in Auburn around Mammoth bar OHV. Probably only a few black trails there.

But I moved to Pilot Hill about 20 min away. If I use the word tech or black diamond, im talking about are the Disney trails out of Salmon Falls about 30 min away. B1ker on youtube created/rides a lot of those

But in response to you, it is the 371,000 feet I have climbed and dropped this year so far.

Picture below shows the fun sections , which we have a lot of stuff like this on normal trails. Not really black stuff

Gen4 motors barely get warm after long climbs at full power so thermally, they are clearly quite capable of being run harder. And the max power of a Gen4 motor doesn't significantly decrease with battery depletion so electromagnetically, the motors are clearly capable of producing much more power, at least when the battery is moderately charged. Mechanically, higher torque will absolutely increase geartrain wear, but has anyone ever worn out Gen4 gears?

So, yes, both Gen4 and Gen4 Smart can be software unlocked to safely produce much more power. For the Smart system it would merely require an intern to press the button unlocking the gen5 tune profile for us. Older Gen4's might require an hour or two of someone's time to compile the new firmware, but still trivial nonetheless.

But why? What's in it for Bosch? They're an auto parts supplier, not a consumer product creator. They don't operate with the Apple/Tesla/DJI mentality of continuous post-sales improvement. They sell you the part and the transaction is complete.

One possible reason the gen 4 is not getting the upgrade is that while the motor can handle it, the battery might not. I had to warranty a 750W for overheating, and the second battery is starting to overheat too. Only happens on steep climbs in summer after riding hard for over 45minutes. Higher torque and watts will put more stress on the battery.

I think the more likely reason is they want more people to buy their new motors and not just update their old motors.

Total BS, the Orbea Wild has the 750wh battery and got the update on the Gen 5 like everyone else

I doubt there is any additional heat dissapating ability of gen 5 compared to Gen4. It will simply be a marketing decision.

Got an older bike... tough luck buy a new bike if you want more power
Got a current bike..... well we have to compete.

MAny update of GEN4 motor getting the latest firmware update May4, 2026? BDU344Y is listed on Bosch latest bulleting regarding this one generation older motor.

If not the full 120nm it would be nice if they could at least bump it to 100nm. A quick read seem like it's only going to be a upgrade in support from 400% to 600%, no mention of change to the nm

CX4 vs CX5

The axle from the rotor on CX4 is smaller than CX5.

eMTB+ was a very nice upgrade, with overun as CXRace (2m).

I'm looking forward to:
#1 - try the "traction control"
#2 - Future Garmin/other integration - something I never understood why Bosch had us on only their units. If possible, I'd love to have Garmin Watch compatability. Dont use Cyclocomputer, and don't want screens on my bike!
#3 - 12A charger --> YES! Finally!
