The Brose Drive S Mag is a belt-driven motor, which is its defining characteristic — smooth, quiet, and noticeably more refined than gear-driven alternatives. 90Nm of torque and 600W peak, in a 3.4kg package. The belt drive means no sudden engagement clunk and very little vibration through the cranks.
The catch is that it's being phased out. Brose have struggled commercially, and finding a dealer who can service one properly is getting harder, particularly outside Germany. Parts availability is a genuine concern if you're buying new or used right now.
If you're already on a Brose-equipped bike and it's running well, enjoy it — it's a genuinely nice motor. If you're choosing between it and something current for a new purchase, I'd steer you elsewhere. The EP801 is smoother in its class, the Bosch CX Gen 5 has a far better support network, and neither carries the "what happens in three years" question mark that Brose now does.
