I own a Cannondale Moterra SL2 and I notice that the shifting if not so wonderful. I mean ite probably not the bike but me not being used to an emtb. I notice that i get the chain BANG (slip?)and jumping and not being as crisp as it should be. Now I am not an expert at shifting so I am sure i am contributing to it but I also think there may be SOME issues with the drivetrain. Its a Deore 1x12 with AT rear derailer and 34t chainring. I notice i am using the bottom 5 gears all the time, hardly ever use the big gears. Was considering a 36t to be more in the middle. I dont have any super steep climbs where I live. Thoughts

1) Change Chain, Cassette and chainring. One of these, or all of these could be worn. But if you change only one, and the other is worn. It will wear the part you just changed quickly.

2) Check your hanger alignment. Fix with tool if you can, otherwise replace the hanger

3) Set your b-screw. Put the bike in 1st gear, then wind the screw till an alignment mark on the cage aligns with the bottom of the 1st sproket teeth.

4) Set your shift alignment with thumbscrew on shifter.

Im going to say that the drive train is not worn yet. I have low mileage on it. In fact it has shifted this way from the time it was new. I did bring it back to my LBS to adjust. I agree with your suggestion that the hanger/cage may be out of alignment. When I look at it it looks skewed, but my LBS says thats the way it is supposed to be. I dont believe them because I have been riding for over 30 years and I dont remember an alignment like this lol!!

Take the bike to another bike shop.
