change the green bottom out stopper for the small one, if it's not already in. That will make a huge difference. Add another mid stroke spacer too, you will lose a touch of top end subtleness but the support is great further through the stroke. There are some nice youtube vids out there to do it...

there isn't really an answer to your question. It's something you're going to have to figure out as you play with the settings. However, lots of guys are getting good range on -AUTO setting.

like mentioned in posts before - that sound you hear when slowly moving the bike backwards is quite normal on most motors, if yours does not do it - it probably will eventually. My motor made loud clacking noise mid climb and stopped giving power. I wouldn't worry about that noise the clutch...
