I ride a lot of slow speed rocky technical terrain where I have to stop and start pedaling as well as backpedal. Quick engagement is key. I use a DT Swiss 240 Ratchet EXP rear hub with 36 teeth which works well. Different from the typical pawl and ratchet system.
Flo Motorsports "unbreakable" brake levers. Stock levers can only move towards the bar. These will also move away from the bar providing more movement instead of breaking. I broke an XT lever and found these available on ebay.
One of the best methods to troubleshoot noises is to use an automotive stethoscope. These are inexpensive and readily available. You can pinpoint a noise location with this tool.

Symptom: When pedaling backwards, the chainring also moved backwards. While moving and then stopping pedaling, initially there is some resistance felt in the crankarms. The bike has only 2k miles and it's mostly ridden in snow - minimal wet conditions.

You can add the threaded bolt and snap ring by using a tap to thread the inner side of the caliper. I did this although I don't remember the thread size and pitch - just search the web and you'll find the spec's.
