If Michael did the Brose upgrade for you, streams and washing won't be a problem. The upgrade makes the motor extremely water resistant...

Dunking a warm motor in cold water will cool the air inside the motor and tend to draw moisture along the crankshaft.

It was dirt! This is not uncommon with the Gen 4 once the crankshaft bushes wear badly.
