• Warning!!

Riding a tuned or deristricted EMTB is not a trivial offence and can have serious legal consequences. Also, many manufacturers can detect the use of a tuning device or deristricting method and may decline a repair under warranty if it was modified from the intended original specification. Deristricting EMTB's can also add increased loads for motors and batteries. Riding above the local law limit may reclassify the bike as a low-powered bike, requiring insurance, registration and a number plate.

Be aware of your local country laws. Many laws prohibit use of modified EMTB's. It is your responsibility to check local laws. Ignoring it, has potential implications to trail access, and risk of prosecution in the event of an accident.

Speedbox hangover?

Hi all, new here.

I have a Trek Rail+ which is only a few months old. The supplying dealer fitted a Speedbox from new, at my request, but it’s been nothing but trouble. Aside from the usability (compared to the Volspeed, which I’ve had on a previous bike) it also threw the Speed System error/Limp mode after about 70 miles (in total, from new!).

It’s been in and out of the shop and their most recent advice was to not use the Flow app at all. They told me that they had set the max power and torque for Turbo and EMTB modes and that those would remain active as long as I didn’t use the app.

When I rode it again, it certainly didn’t feel like it was giving full power, so I connected the bike to the app and checked, and everything was back to standard (80Nm etc). It seems it will only hold those settings if you use the app.

It’s actively affecting how I use the bike, as I’m constantly expecting another Limp Mode session, so I’ve decided to remove the Speedbox, and I’ll consider my options going forward (which may well be to sell the Trek and buy something older; I previously had a Cube Reaction with a Volspeed and never had a moment’s trouble). I’ve had the Trek 3 months or more and only done 120 miles total on it, as I constantly feel I need to be in range of the missus and the car to collect me if it fails again.

So, after my long ramble (sorry!) my question is, will the bike have retained any memory of the Speedbox (I guess Yes?) and more importantly will it now behave itself if I use it correctly, with full power via the app, and not throw further errors?

Thanks.

Assuming the errors were caused by the speed box then most likely the bike will be perfect when removed. I have a rail+ and would recommend the ebike Dr to sort you out with the nz firmware. I have the USA software and it's been great. Zero issue with app etc and everything works as it should

Thanks, that’s good to know. Yes, I’m in touch with the Doc as well 👍
