I have nothing but contempt for miscreants zipping around on their eMoto bikes, but I feel sad for the old man, the mom, and the kid. There price of foolishness is not cheap.

I have NO sympathy for "the mom and the kid" . From the above link:

"Investigators say Mejer was warned by sheriff's deputies about letting her son illegally ride the e-motorcycle in June of last year.

Mejer reportedly called the sheriff's department, complaining that a neighbor was posting pictures of her son riding an e-motorcycle, saying he was out of control.

The sheriff's department says it spent nearly 30 minutes explaining to her that her son could not legally ride the e-motorcycle, and that she would face criminal charges if she continued to let him."

Could be more nuanced than please sir, my take, it's so hot. For all we know Mum forbade her son after the cops got involved & he defied her. Amazing I know that a headstrong teenager could even be a thing but the devil is in the detail & the detail is not there.

The obvious question to ask is whether she herself bought the e-bike? If she did buy it was it for herself to ride and if not then who was it bought for? If she didn't buy it then who did buy it and who was it bought for.

It would be helpful if you would provide more detail. Thanks.

Oh I don't know so much, it's a decent exercise in standing up your earlier conclusion. This will never land but fuck it, I'll have a try anyway. The point is you didn't know the circumstances but when pulled up, you run off to shore up your chest beating. For all I know the woman is a dud & her son is a hump but I'm open to correction. Only a fool barrels through life unclouded by doubt, it's kind of why civilised countries have courts, trials and the rest of that inconvenient process shit that gets in your way.

what are you, 13 years old? You buy your kid a weapon like a Surron, and they go and injure someone or themselves, you are 1000% responsible. See my earlier post about school shootings and parents being prosecuted for children's actions. "Defied the parent" holds no water in a court of law, sonny boyee.
 
It's not just Surron type e-motorbikes, I watched this kid on an e-scooter (around 11-12 yo, 13 at a push) on a shared pavement/cycle path near Nottingham doing 35mph (no helmet obviously) as I kept level with him in the car for about 1/2 mile and clocked his speed. There's no way that kid bought that illegal e-scooter himself yet if he hit someone he'd seriously hurt them or worse., and when he came to a junction, straight over not even looking (crazy!). And a police car went past him and did as you've probably guessed, sod all.

As far as I know, Surrons have keys. If she is forbidding his use of the Surron, she should take them. That sort of exercise of authority is normal both for parents (taking phone or video game privileges away for a kid who is misbehaving), and for friends, who take the keys from another friend who has had too much to drink.

I agree. Can you think of any scenario where that happens & is got around by a determined child? Is there any possible universe where she has tried to stop him & been defeated?

I cannot see why this is so hard for people to grasp. Life isn't binary on the whole. It could be the woman doesn't care, hasn't listened & is now getting her comeuppance. It's also possible she does but her son is a bad boy who ignored his mum's instructions & has now dragged her down with him.

What gets on my tits is the Daily Express authoritarian brigade rushing to judgement before any of the facts are aired in court. The boy mowed down a guy, this we know. The mother may or may not be jointly culpable. This we don't know yet, it's why we have lawyers, judges & juries, however inconvenient some people find that arrangement.
 
Judging from their high tower when we damn well know we were all doing absolutely worse stuff than that when we were younger. I know I could have killed or seriously injured people way too many times doing dumb crap. Sad story all around, feel bad for all involved.

I agree fully Rusty, in regard to the value to the proper airing of facts in court, and a trial. You could very well be right, and there could be some extenuating circumstances. I have seen a wide variety of parenting situations over the years, everything from parents who were strict to the point of being draconian over the smallest of things, to parents who were pushovers when it came to children who walked all over them, and we really do not know the situation here. If this lady took the keys, and put them in a safe, and then the kid stole a plasma torch and cut a hole in it to get his keys back while she was at work, then my sympathies lay with her. If this lady didn't take the Surron's keys and told the kid something vague like "if you do anything irresponsible, you are in big trouble mister!" my sympathies are...less sympathetic. Unfortunately, the news is not great with follow ups on these sorts of sensational stories, but hopefully we find out.

On the one hand, I fully agree with you. On the other hand, I want to ask "what were you doing when you were younger, because I sure as hell never put anyone in the hospital"?! This problem gets to an issue I've often pondered, when philosophical moods strike. I wouldn't go so far as to say what you've said "we damn well know we were all doing absolutely worse stuff than that when we were younger". However, to your point, I am pretty damn sure we've all exceeded the speed limit in our cars. Outside of certain relatively rare circumstances, going faster in your car will always increase the severity of an accident. If we happened to get in an accident in one of those moments, is our speeding worse, morally speaking, than someone else who was speeding the same amount, or even going faster, but who didn't happen to get into an accident? In other words, is willfully incurring the risk the root of the "sin", or does the sin occur if/when some terrible outcome occurs? I'm still unsure of the answer.

Is doing meth and driving 100mph in traffic a “sin” or is it only one if you kill someone while doing so? No I’ve never done that lol, just an extreme example. You morally know excessively speeding, derestricting your emtb (lol), drinking and driving, running a light, etc is wrong. Most of you guys have done some or all of those things and much worse, but we just got lucky and didn’t hurt anyone else.

I don't think I did either but more from luck than any youthful judgement. As an under 16 I illegally rode a motorcycle regularly off road in the countryside. Once I reached 16, it was racing around on the roads with a legal motorcycle with friends and generally up to mischief, today's e-bike ASB had nothing on us, anyone remember the mods and rockers, Brighton and other coastal towns?
No, many of us can look back and think there but for the grace of not getting caught, go I!:devilish:
 
Kids AND adults are wadding themselves up on the streets left and right where I live. I was sitting at a light last week and a young adult blew through crosswalk in front of me at hi speed on a fat tire class 3 going opposite direction of traffic, T-bones a car making a left-hand turn, flew over the trunk and laid sprawled in the middle of the intersection. (No helmet of course). She gets up in a daze and immediately starts blaming the driver claiming she had the “walk” light. 🙄
 
Evolution has a way of sorting things out …it takes a while though. 🤓

…which requires more patience than I currently have.
