Crestline x DJI - RS 181 SPECTRE Edition

I'm going for the rumored 'in between' 700wh battery. Currently have the 800wh in my druid and don't think I've ever fully depleted it in 1 ride. Would rather shed a couple pounds for better handling and still have a little more juice than the 600. I believe the 700 and rumored 936wh batteries are the same size as the current 600 and 800 batteries. I have a powerboost f150 with a generator in the truck so I can always use the bed outlets and the fast charger to juice up the bike for 1 last lap if I do end up killing the battery on a long day haha

So much speculation with the upcoming Avinox. I read where ppl are saying a 700wh battery, but anything about an extender? I think it would be rad if they made one so you could run it with just the extender… a boy can dream, no?

You're thinking is ahead of the game I feel, one day the shift will turn from all out power specs to balancing the package out with lightweight and range.

Ebikes for those that like to ride bikes is the future - once they sell an ebike to everyone else in the world that suddenly needs one now!

But yeahp, if it costs more than a motorcycle, you bet I want more power too..
 
Yep. The suspension on it is incredible. There’s a real difference in having no chain and mech moving around on the back. There’s very little pedal kickback on this system too. It’s ultra sensitive and pretty bottomless feeling. If I could get that platform / feeling on any other bike I’d take it.

BTW - I was riding both bikes on the same trails. I had the Crestline with me on that trip too 👊
There are so many differences between the rear ends of the these bikes that it's really not a fair comparison. Agreed, not having that heavy, long chain slapping around, especially in the smaller cogs where the derailleur clutch has to take up all that slack, makes a huge difference. Reduced unsprung weight and reduced rotational kickback; all of which brings the benefits of a coil-sprung horst link 4-bar into the foreground.

But from the sounds of it, there is no internal upgrade to the MGU itself, which still leaves quite a lot on floor for improvement. Someday, and it can't come soon enough, we will see an Avinox MGU (or MTU as it might dispense with a spur gear cluster like the Pinion), perfectly fitted to a Crestline or your favorite boutique brand of your choice. But to the shed the chain, Crestline would have to move away from VPP in its current form.

Could someone who owns an RS181 with the DJI system take a photo of the tire clearance at the chainstays and seatstays, and share what tires they’re running? I’d like to comfortably fit 2.6" tires without any rubbing. It’s a small detail, but I don’t want to compromise on my next eMTB. 😉

I believe the rear triangle is completely different on the 180 to the 181.1. I guess you are aware they were talking about a different bike in this review? The rs180 doesnt have the removable dropouts either. Im not trying to be snarky 🤘🏼

Sorry I cant answer your question, but I am also somewhat curious. I used to run 2.6 on my bikes, but have found 2.5 make it easier to drop into corners and whatnot. Maybe its all in my head…

That’s why I’m curious whether tire clearance changed on the DJI-powered 181.1 and 181.2, especially with the adjustable dropouts. Troydon actually recommended the 450 MX setup for me (180 cm / 85 kg), so I’m trying to dial in the details before committing.

So the question still stands for owners of the newer RS181.X bikes: what rear tire are you running, and how much clearance do you realistically have?

My other concern is mud. From what I’ve seen, there’s only a pretty minimal “mudguard,” mostly covering the shock. Curious how much dirt builds up around the links and shock in real-world riding.

I've only run 2.4 dhr2 (30mm rim) on my mx (445 chainstay). I live in socal so mud isn't really an issue. Pics for reference.

I'm running a 29x2.5 Schwalbe Magic Mary Gravity Radial with zero issues.

Also thinking this tire clearance issue is specific to the older Bosch 180 inthe video.

Noticed when I ordered the Plaid big T mentioned frame revisions and even comes right out and says "Plenty of tire and mud clearance" as a hot new feature!

Pretty cool, seems the small batch approach allows lots of improvements in designs from each iteration!

Magic Mary radials are one of few items almost as difficult to come by as a Crestline frame!!

I got Mary and Albert on standby, and notifications setup too as I think it makes sense to have an extra set for when they wear out. Dont want to be in a scenario waiting for tires when I need new ones...

Oddly enough, I did not get notified but see a rear mx Magic Mary is available today.

Found a forum user posted some more details around this HOT new 700wh battery!

1kg lighter than an 800wh (3740 grams) does put the 700 right around or under current 600wh weight (2870 grams), and the new magic cells seems to have improved range comparable to the 800.

My Plaid is coming with the 600, but the shop offered to sell me an 800 separately already. You bet if the new 700 is available I will definitely will opt for this route too!!

And yeahp, that extra power seems to have justified a 38 tooth chainring from the parts bin. :love:

excited for the new battery layout if it's lighter and just as efficient. I've already got the 700wh battery confirmed for my forged frame.

The 700 will have range right between the old 600 and 800.
Losing 0.9kg will not equate to an extra 100wh of battery.

the extra range isn't coming from the weight loss, it's a new type of battery. Molicel vs LG I believe and hopefully just a more efficient battery vs the old LG ones.

You do realize batteries with the same capacity can vary with with efficiency right? Capacity isn’t the only thing that dictates a battery’s efficiency. Internal resistance plays a huge role in battery efficiency.

I think 600,800 is gonna be the same battery. 700 uses the new molicel batteries. Heard rumors there is going to be a 936wh battery utilizing the new molicel but that’s still unconfirmed

I have some level of familiarity.
The IR differences you are referencing are so small at e-bike current draw as to be almost immeasurable. The benefits of going to the 3600mah cells is reflected solely in their larger capacity, totalling 700wh, in what was a 600wh configuration.
