So noticed a bit of play in this pivot ( think it’s called main pivot) so decided to check the bearings. I applied some penetrating oil, waited a day then tried to undo. I think the bolt has split, with the threaded end remaining still when the head end just spins (Although not freely). I now can’t figure out how to remove either. putting. Hex spanner in just makes it spin as the threads are at the other end and now separated. I can’t seem to grip with any confidence to try and pull out. I have no way of accessing. Does anyone have any advice or am I totally screwed ?

would really appreciate some advice here. And if anyone know the part number of a replacement bolt that would be helpful too

Ime penatrating oils are a waste of time unless a bolt is already moving. If it were my bike, I would either cut a slot in the bolt with a Dremel & use a flat bladed tool to undo it or hammer in an oversized star bit or similar to grip the bolt, similar principle to an ezy out.

If it were me I would ask my LBS to remove the bolt to avoid the risk of fubaring it completely.

I also would take it to the LBS, but only if I had confidence in them. I wouldn't want them to just give it to the Saturday boy! So talk to them, tell them what you have done and what their aproach will be. Ask if they are confident, and do they have more than one idea. Have they dealt with this problem before?

If you can't or don't want to use your LBS, then try this:

Use a small drill into the threaded end, the torque might undo the bolt. I know that sounds wrong, because the drill is going in clockwise. But from the perspective of the bolt, unwinding from that end is exactly the direction of drilling required. Think about it.

It might not work, but I have done it once and and seen it done once. The heat generated by friction helps to loosen the grip between the bolt and the frame. Even if the drill goes all the way through without success, then you have a nice starting point for a bolt removal tool that has two teeth on it that will cut into the bolt and drive it round. If you don't have a removal tool, then a tool called a "centre" that machinists use in lathes and drilling machines will do the job just as well.

Thanks, the bolt head is turning freely, with a Hex Spanner so an easy out won't help there unfortunately, that may be an option tough for the Threaded end....I may bottle out and take to a bike shop though

Think that's what I will do.....Thanks

Find out how they did it.
Better still ask how they are going to do it before hand.
