Where to live in the UK (with trails in easy reach)?

Sheffield/Chesterfield area on their western Peak District side. Regardless of where the OP goes he needs to check out a decent map/app of rides in that area.

Forest of Dean

Base yourself in towns Monmouth, Lydney, Coleford or nearby villages like Pillowell, Soudley, Cinderford, Dry Brook, Parkend etc.

Lydney is probably a good option for the OP. Mtb from the door, station for easy access to Bristol/Cardiff. Most of the locations listed in this thread would suck without a car.

OP - do you want Mtb from the door and cities by train, or other way round? If it was city, I’d probably go Bristol or Sheffield. Or somewhere in the alps.

It would be the Tweed Valley for me, I’ve been trying to talk my wife into moving down there for a year now but she refuses to leave the Highlands.
Yeah I was gonna suggest this. It's not that far from Edi but has LOADS of riding available with every type of trail you'd want and need.

Too far south for me though, but I'm easy with any traveling for rides

Think we are fairly lucky within the UK… when ya can drive for a couple of hours.. and where you can be.. North .. South .. East or West..👍

I agree with this.

I live in West Wales, right on the coast, near Cardigan.
Dyfi is 1.20hrs drive
BPW is 1.45hrs
Brechfa is 45min
Hafod is 45min
North Wales trails are about 2 hrs drive.

Buuuuuuut, there’s no decent local trails to me, everything is a drive. The beach is 200 meters from my door though.

Back to the original question, FoD, Bristol, Cardiff then Sheffield and some of Yorkshire.

I’ve only been to the Tweed Valley once (on my honeymoon!) so can’t really comment.

I live a five minute from ride to great trails on my doorstep, on the North edge Forest of Dean, where there's tons of riding. Less than a hours ride out and the Wye Valley off piste is waiting. South Wales trails are an hour by car. I couldn't think of a better place to live.

Thanks all again for the input. Sorry, been a bit too busy to engage much in the thread but the feedback is greatly appreciated!

I think S. Wales might be front runner atm. I think I would prefer a city/larger town so perhaps Cardiff is the best shout. Perphsps Newport or Gloucester either?

I like the idea of Edinburgh too but I think it may be a bit tricky without my own transport.

If you had to recommend a city (ideally) or a place to live in the UK with easy reach to good/great riding where would you recommend? I am currently thinking about relocating to the UK sometime in 2026 and need some suggestions. The kicker is I will most likely not have a car/van (at least initially) so ideally somewhere I can ride to the trails from my place or grab a train with the bike. I guess I could car share once I get to know some locals also.

Currently Manchester and Sheffield seem to tick the boxes. Cardiff and Edinburgh are also on the list. I prefer gravity focused Enduro or DH type riding.
First three are full of migrunts, just go rural wales or rural Scotland, buy a van and travel around, keep well clear of cities!

If I had the choice & the ability to WFH I’d go to Mid Wales, the people are lovely, the scenery is great, house prices are reasonable and you are surrounded by some of the best riding in the UK while being a 5hr drive from Tweed Valley or Dover where you’re then only an 8hr drive to Morzine etc

Don't disagree but the chap doesn't have a car, he's mentioned it once or twice.

Right so just to bump the thread. I think Manchester/Sheffield are top of my list currently. Based on what I've been watching on YT the riding on Win Hill seems exactly what I'm looking for.

I think Sheffield is probably a better bet riding wise as you have easy access to Hope Valley and also easy access to Whrancliffe woods too. That said I think Manchester ticks more boxes as a place to live outside of the riding stuff.

Decisions, decisions.

Edinburgh has good busses that you can put your Mtb on and then get dropped off outside of Glentress etc.
I did see that. Looks like two spots per bus though so could be tricky if others are doing the same. The rental prices in Edinburgh are also pretty rough.

I think Sheffield is edging it for me atm as Wharncliffe seems easily reachable from the city on the bike. gonna look into some accommodation options tomorrow.

Just noticed this post. I have been fantasising about a road trip with camper van for years now. Unsure how far South I would go i love Yorkshire and Wales would be nice. I fancy trail centres but doesn't have to be. Need to work out logistics campsites etc. I wouldn't want to drive more than 3 hours each day. So I could start off Perthshire then Glentress . Unsure of where after that. Good news is the old Shimano bike box/bag fits in the van with the r and r bed in sleeping mode. Ideally I would prefer a loop any suggestions welcome.

i live just south of Bristol in Taunton, we have some amazing natural tails here, and more open up with the use of a vehicle, whether public or private transport, also a lot of local riders with vans and racks that are always looking for eager riders to join them, you also have the benefit of the south being nicer than the north :sneaky: and housing/rent pricing better than most cities.

Barnstaple in North Devon has some great trails as your right on the tarka trail you get the best of both with lovely countryside and beaches also there's a train station in Barnstaple enabling you to go further afield check it out I use komoot for my trails.

And Exmoor is right in your doorstep with miles and miles of trails. 👍
