Hi everyone, I really need your help. I bought a Giant Reign E+ 3 (2023, 800 Wh) and have only ridden about 130 km. When I connected the bike computer, a short circuit occurred, which caused the motor control board to burn out.

I took it to a friend who’s experienced with electronics — he opened the motor and found that the board was damaged and cannot be repaired.

As far as I understand, the control boards are not sold separately, and I’ll need to buy the whole motor assembly.

Could you please help me with the following:

  • Where can I find and buy a new motor? (There are no Giant dealers in my country.)
  • What is the correct name of the motor used on my bike, and how should I search for it?
  • I found some info online saying that my bike uses a Yamaha SyncDrive Pro 2 motor — is that correct?

Any advice, links, or recommendations for shops or services that can help with this issue would be greatly appreciated!

This is going to sound a bit crazy... if you cannot source the exact model motor, you can actually fit a different model, even a different brand. Yamaha, Bafang and several other motor manufacturers use a Universal Mounting Bracket which has standard size and positioned bolt holes.

All you then need to change is the switch control which fits the motor brand. You can still use the original battery with some DIY wiring. If you can't find a SyncDrive Pro 2, find a similar version.

Option B. Part out the bike, motor and parts to recoup some money for a new bike. All the bits and pieces, including the battery and charger are valuable spare parts and eBay is your best friend... (after the war).

The QR code reveals the Yamaha motor model and version: X2YA10047378
The preceding numbers are the manufacture date and production number.

(I could get sanctioned for this post).

I’m considering installing this motor — https://www.ebay.de/itm/136442494942 — but I’d like to know if it’s compatible with my bike (I have a Giant Reign E+ 3 2023), and whether it’s enough to simply replace the old motor or if any reprogramming or additional adjustments will be required.

No. The motor has Giant product code, and this motor is made by Shimano not Yamaha. Your Yamaha motor will have the connectors on top. This motor has connections on side which is Shimano EP6/8 type and the wiring loom will be different.

Secondly it's stupidly expensive and the listing says the seller does not ship internationally. ChatGP gave you wrong information... as usual.

Could you please tell me how and where I can buy this motor? I haven’t been able to find it anywhere. And how can I make sure that this motor is fully compatible with my bike?

Thanks for the clarification.
I’ve checked the connectors on my motor and compared them with the ones in the listing — they look identical.

Also, the motor code X2Y appears to match the code on my current motor, so it seems to be the same series.

I understand your point about Shimano vs Yamaha, but based on the connectors and the code, this particular unit looks compatible with my bike. If I’m missing something important, please let me know. I just want to make sure I order the correct replacement.

Sorry, but everything you said is incorrect. The item number is the same as the motor installed on my wife’s Trance X just four months ago. I know this because it matches the item number on the workshop note from our dealer.

Pro 2 motors and Yamaha PW-X3 have side connections, not top connections. The previous version of the Pro motors had the cables and connectors coming out from the top, as you said… but Giant switched to Pro 2 motors in 2022. So yes, that motor is fully compatible with his bike.

I recommend asking your dealer for a new motor. Giant usually offers a crash-replacement program for frames and other components, and I assume it should be the same for motors.
In my opinion, it makes no sense to try to switch to a completely different brand and somehow adapt it to the bike.
