My wife and I have a couple of hardtail e-bikes that we ride around the mountains in Idaho. The two bikes came with commuter type tyres, but we ride a great deal on relatively easy single track trails and dirt/gravel/sand roads. When we just want to run to town (15 miles away) we ride on the road. Bottom line we are looking for a tyre that will work well on multi surface and has relatively good puncture protection. Sizes are 27.5x2.1 and 27,5x2.4. Thanks!

I run , Schwalbe Big Ben on my Specialised, they have a puncture guard, available in all sizes.. I’ve ridden off road, light stone/ gravel and mostly road( commute), never had a problem..rain or shine..I was recommended them.. can’t fault them..👍

Thanks, if possible I would like to run the same tire tread on both bikes. I am wondering if a gravel bike tire would work or should I stick with tires specifically made for an e-
bike?

I have Schwalbe Smart Sam’s on my commuter, cheapest one’s, no special puncture protection, I do mainly commuting, 21km/day, hardpacked sand around 16km and asphalt 5km. I have second pair going now and I have done around 8000km-9000km (hard to say since I use spiked tires on winter) on those. I had first puncture this summer, really tiny and sharp piece of glass. I can recommend them, they roll really well and come all possible size’s 😀

Don't bother with tyres marketed specifically as Ebike tyres. Just buy tyres for your purpose that you would normally buy. Inflate them to the pressure that gives you the ride feel that you are looking for.

Thanks all, it looks like Johnny Watts will fit one bike and Big Ben the other.

Had loads of punctures when I had big Ben's fitted, so decided to swap to marathon e-plus and fill the tubes with slime.
Brilliant 2000 miles and no punctures. Used on road, gravel, dirt and grass tracks. Great grip on all surfaces ive used and in the wet too.
No trainer for me

Who makes the Marathon e-plus?

Gosh, that's alot of money, but they are good. They're averaging around £36 per tyre in the uk

Are you concerned about getting punctures, or is not getting any flats that is driving you?
You could go with heavy thick-walled tyres and/or puncture- proof tubes.
But instead, consider going tubeless with a sealant. :)
Countless riders use tubeless with sealant; it is not a weird or niche thing to do.

You will save the weight of the tube (less the weight of the sealant). But much more important than the weight saving will be the fact that with sealant, you will never notice that you ever got a puncture in the first place. When I used a green water-based sealant, a small green dot would appear overnight at the site of a puncture. I once counted 22 dots on one tyre and 24 on the other, yet I had never been aware that I had ever had a puncture! I sure never had any flats!

I can't get that green water-based sealant anymore, but just about any latex-based sealant will do the job of flat-proofing your tyres. They just don't give you the green indicator. :(

Note: I used to average a flat every 14 miles until my LBC recommended Slime-filled tubes. They worked and I never had a flat again. But boy are they heavy! Once I went tubeless with sealant, I never looked back, nor ever had a flat, except twice with faulty tyres that burst open at the bead, not even Slime-filled tubes will help you there!
