Just lost another Maxxis tyre, 3rd one in the last couple months. All were in good condition with loads of tread.
First was Assegai exo + on the front with cut side wall. Then Assegai DD on rear with cut sidewall, that had only 2 rides on it. Then today DHR DD rear went off with a bang with a cut in the centre of the tread landing a drop.
Is it bad luck or a known thing with them and time to try something else.
Any suggestions for something more cut resistant ?
Starting to get expensive.

The one time I tried running Maxxis tires (DHR II DD casing) I cracked a rim going off a drop, same pressure as everyhting else I've ran. Was it the tire, was it user error, did I hit a sharp rock? I don't know, but I never put them on again. With Schwalbe radials and Continentals performing so well I don't have a need too.

Where do you ride?

I got three punctures -24 summer, rear tires, two contis DH tires and DHRII DD. I never have punctured tubeless tires before that…or after 😀 High speed situations to a rock two times and one blind drop to a rock. So rider errors…and bad luck…and maybe too low pressures…

What pressure are you running/how heavy are you? Unless you’re running properly low and are a larger rider, I’d say it’s probably just bad luck.

I run Assegai/DHR on my alps bike, DD casings iirc. I have had one cut tire in 4 3 week trips of riding everyday. The tyre in question was a bad case on a red at Serre Chevalier, and it had already done about 6 weeks so was pretty soft. On the other hand, a mate gashed open a 2 day old tire at Dyfi, was a softer casing thou.

73kg 20/21psi. One in the Alps on a trail, one in Morzine a day later then one yesterday. Second 2 were DD casings both non repairable.

I have had the same experience with Maxxis DD every time I try to go back to them, I rarely get more than a month or two before a major sidewall tear. I have extremely good experiences with Schwalbe supergravity tyres, very rarely puncture and these are what I run for the last 10 years. I havn't run many other brands regularly but had early failures on rear contis (enduro thread) and vittoria.

Sometimes due to manufacturing errors, poor quality control, whatever, tyres are delivered to the market that just fail and it's not rider error.

For example, pre-emtb, I was a big fan of Continental Trail King tyres with the black chilli compound (BCC). Conti tyres with BCC are only made in one factory in Germany (or were at the time). One tyre failed by the sidewall splitting at the bead at about 700 miles. I had to take photos to make the warranty claim. The supplier was off the internet, I can't recall what location. They offered to replace, but they didn't have a replacement in stock, so I got a refund. I had already purchased another identical tyre from a different supplier off the net. That tyre failed in exactly the same way after about 700 miles (I believe that they were within 40 miles of each other on distance). I had to take pics again for the warranty claim and I noticed that they had both failed in the same rotational place with respect to the logo. This has to be a manufacturing fault and there must have been hundreds of them made before they picked it up.

The third tyre I bought, from yet another internet supplier, lasted the usual distance without any problem.
But I accept that there are many, many good tyres out there, so why take a chance? But your carefully researched choice may have just hit a bad streak like those Contis did. I had zero problems before or after, but I wouldn't blame anyone for branding Contis for perpetuity and spreading the word that they were bad tyres. That is the risk manufacturers takes when they fail to control their quality.

I had similar issues with maxxis tyres so on advice of friends and LBS went to schwalbe (magic Mary frt, big betty rear) best move I ever made. Grip and wear rate better (in my opinion) never had any side wall damage in 4 years and there is plenty of stone and rock where I ride.

I stopped purchasing Maxxis a year or 2 back. I kept peeling the side knobs off them way too early. Not wearing them down from the top, but tearing them off at the base. Dissectors i think.

I have only had one Maxxis tyre split / tear about a 1 cm size rip in the mid-tread area. That was the last time I rode Maxxis Exo plus casings. But not a reason to ditch the brand all together.

I now use Schwalbes and have been happy so far. No problems with grip. Tyres seam to last longer aswell. And ive had no failures yet.

I gave up on Maxxis years ago. Multiple warranty claims. The wobble on new tyres.

Had this happen on two separate occasions on my Focus Jam2 as well as once on my Commencal Clash. My Vittoria tyre liner allowed me to ride on.
I am now running Michelin E-wild tyres and won't be going back to Maxxis any time soon
