I have a 2021 trek rail which is pre smart system fitted with a purion, if I fit a kiox controller would this now be upgraded to a bosch smart system? Asking as I know there are some battery extenders available for smart system bikes, but not the pre smart system bikes.

I put a Kiox display on my 2021 Rail 7 within a month of buying it. Great upgrade. and it's had a Volspeed 4 on it since that day with no problems.
You installed the Kiox retrofit, not the Bosch Smart System
Also installed retrofits on our 2022 alloy Trek Rails.
The OP asked about converting to the Bosch Smart System.
Yes, he did, and he can't. As said previously, we fitted the "Retrofit" which is non-Smart.

Simple plug and play.
Just a bit of a faff removing the redundant connection lead and threading the new one through the frame to the motor.
More fiddly than complex.

And just to be certain, we are talking the Kiox 300 retrofit?
Kiox 300 is only for Bosch Smart System bikes.
