E8000 motor mount angle and effect?

After hard pounding 7200 miles (11,600 for the km guys) my bearing on my e8000 died on my YT Decoy.

I decided to replace instead of repair since I cannot find anyone in the US to do it. While it took a while for Shimano to get a motor to the shop, I recd a new e8000.

The shop did the motor replacement, but had some issues. New motor fw ver 4.10 and the old motor ver 4.8

What does the motor mount angle do?

the shop has it at 0 deg, but my old set up had it at 30 deg.

I believe that motor angle is used by motor software to determine the rider pedal stroke upper and lower position, and with this and the motor torque sensor, the motor makes calculations for the assistance.

Motor configuration should have the correct angle, if not, something could go wrong.

In my old bike with Shimano E8000 Motor, I tried to verify the real motor angle value versus the configured one, I used Photoshop to measure the angle in a picture, and the measured angle (22º) was very close to the value in configuration (24º).

It's incredible that they have not just made it user configurable. Such bs. I hate that all the big motor manufacturers are so locked down and threat their customers as idiots.

It can be configured using STUnlocker Premium version, it cost me 30€ when I bougth it some years ago.

It is configurable, either with a bike shops Shimano service software or DIY via STunlocker.

It’s not unusual at all for motors to be locked to stop tampering, but it is one of the frustrations of EMTBs over non powered bikes. I miss being able to do everything myself, and one reason I’m tempted to go ‘self build’ with an open motor system next time.

Tampering? Why am.i not able to easily configure the motor i own?? Ok so if I rente it, sure. But I frikkin bought and paid for the motor. I want to be able to move it to another bike if it please me.

Tampering, as in, somebody not knowing what they’re doing and changing things like motor angle etc, and breaking stuff. It’s also a legal requirement in most jurisdictions to prevent de-restricting etc.

It is what it is, but you can move Shimano motors between bikes, but you might need dealer software or your own third party setup to change parameters to make it work properly.

I don’t like it either, nor do I like the way that Specialized make it so that you have to go to a dealer to pair something basic like a new TCU, but at the end of the day it’s not exactly onerous and my local bike shop didn’t even charge me last time I had to do that.

It’s only the Bafang’s etc of this world that have a truly open source setup on their motors and controllers.

I don't neeed a Nanny to hold my hand and tell me what I can and can't do with my hardware. Unless it breaks a law, don't limit me. I also want motors to be user serviceable and have parts available to be bought.
I am not a child and I will be pissed off if a company treats me like one.

I don’t disagree that we should be allowed to do whatever with our own property etc, within the law obviously, but I tend to deal with these things as they are rather than how I wished them to be.

I’ve posted a few times that I don’t like having to rely on bike shops to get support, especially if they change brands after you’ve made a purchase and all of a sudden they only support what they sell now.

It’s a PITA, and why I choose the bikes I buy carefully nowadays.
