just bought a set off magura mt 5 with disc. just wondering if i need to drop the motor for the rear break or could i maybe pull the cable back threw ??

Connect the old cable up to the new one with a barb and see if you can pull it through

Has anyone actually tried to use the original brake cables with a different set of brakes, assume it may be possible to flush the cable with water and brake cleaner to flush out the dot fluid completely

If possible would certainly be easier

I have just done same on an E160. I connected the two hoded with a sram connectimijig (little gizmo with two opposite threads) pulled through easily
 
Yes I did it ok with the little red barb and a bit of washing up liquid.

I ordered one of those red barb gizmos but they were out of stock at the time
So I got a 2.5mm dia wood screw cut the head off it and filed it too a point, and worked that into both ends of the cable, worked a treat

I would drop the motor to avoid any pinching, kinking or looping. The small red barb tool is helpful. A gentle push-pull method can be used if all the hose clamping points are loosened or released.

I’m not sure I would do that. It could void any warranty if different mineral oils are discovered. Cleaning out the old hose would be a pain. Also the banjo connector on the rear might need to be replaced/cut.

I also heard the the inside diameter is slightly different. I’m not sure about that though.

Don’t contaminate the new pads and clean the rotor with isopropyl.

The first time I installed MT7’s I tried feeding the new hose with the red barbed joining tool through the motor compartment without removing the motor …that failed.

Had to drop the motor and I was glad I did. The rats-nest of wires and hoses looked like a 5 year old had originally assembled my bike. The proper routing of hoses and wires was now possible. Any potential kinks or loops or dirt traps were avoided. Gave me a little peace of mind also.

As far as reusing an existing brake line from another manufacturer …never tried that. I’ve only installed several sets of Magura MT7 brake systems so I don’t have a lot of experience.
 
I know the ID of a Magura hose is 2.3mm and OS. 5mm
Sram I believe as with shimano are 2.1mm ID
I did the XT levers mod with my Magura calipers a couple of years ago
You will need the magura hose because the pistons being larger in the calipers, to increase the performance of the braking

I wonder if the Magura barbs and/or olives are a little larger? I can understand that more volume would be needed because of the larger pistons. Maybe the pressure generated from the master cylinder (lever) is slightly different also.
 
i cheated in the end dropped bike off at local bike shop to fit the rear brake
just wondering what pads people have found good for uk riding
