Rail (750Wh) Mulleting the Rail

Try 4 years...

The only reason it's back on 29s is that it's now my commuter bike and I'm buggered if I'm buying wheels and tyres for it when I've got a 29er Eddy Current on a wheel in the garage. On the rare occasion it's used off road it gets the 27.5 back on it.
12 months from now. Obviously.

Ah, well, as I've already answered that above I'm now not sure why you are so keen to be wrong, but hey ho.

I converted my sons Trek Rail to a Mullet setup
He's only 13 years old and found the larger wheels trickier to handle, so hopefully this helps him a bit.

I also changed the cranks from 165mm to 155mm to reduce pedals strikes and added a new Schwalbe Albert Radial tyre

I mulleted my Rail last week as an experiment. I really like how it handled, but ground clearance was a bit of an issue for me. My local trails are really technical with lots of granite, my motor guard was getting hung up constantly. I'm going to keep the 27.5" wheel that I built and swap it in for bike park days though.
even with the chip flipped up into high, huh?

The flip chip doesn’t compensate enough on its own. You absolutely need to go with a 170mm fork (easy air shaft replacement you can do at home). 3 years in and I LOVE it, definitely NOT a fad! Crank length is critical; I’m on 160’s but 155’s would be needed if you have very rocky terrain (thankfully we do not in the loamy Pacific NW). Lastly you absolutely NEED to switch to an 11 speed drivetrain (unless you are on a Sram T type der as those disengage when a stick gets jammed). The 12 speed cable ders hang down too low and you’ll tear off your der (don’t ask me how I know this). 11 speed cage is shorter and allows for better ground clearance which is critical for any mullet as you’ll pull up A LOT of trail debris if you try to stay with 12 speed. Also the smaller rear wheel acts like a smaller gear anyway so you don’t really need anything bigger than a 42t cog unless you are a really weak rider. This is why a lot of purpose built mullets are coming with 11 speed as standard. My 2 cents.

Have FUN!
