Powerfly was paid for with redundancy money, Rail was a warranty replacement for the Powerfly with the difference on 0% credit card and the KenSL was paid for when my mum gave me and two brothers money out of my dad's estate.

My Haibike AllMtn 3.0 was £4.5k.

I had £1,250 from the sale of my 2021 Trance analogue. I had £250 cash and my workplace had a ride to work scheme but had a max cap of £3k. Most importantly, under no circumstances (I tried hard) would work let me 'top up' to get a more expensive bike.

The bike shop understood my plight so for the purposes of official paperwork 'sold' me a Haibike HardSeven (£2999) but handed me a shiny new AllMtn complete with a handwritten invoice after I passed over to them the extra £1500 cash.

Gotta love LBS'.

The bike scheme saved me £1000 so I actually paid £3500 for the bike.

Now that’s a bike shop to support 👏👏
That’s great to hear they made your purchase possible.

I’m fortunate enough to receive decent bonuses with work (when it’s all going well) so bikes have all been paid for. However, it’s the constant maintenance that’s financially draining, especially as I maintain my partners bike as well as mine. For example, in the past few weeks I’ve changed all the linkage & headset bearings for two bikes, replaced my dropper post, and hers needs changing now too. My fork is also in for a full service. This is just in the last few weeks. Last month was new chains & new chain rings, for two bikes, it’s never ending!

Awesome!

I had an E reg MK2 16v which I converted to turbo (low boost - 7psi). I managed to wangle a proper manifold (and turbo) for it out of Turbo Technics - they had officially stopped doing their own conversions but had a few parts left on their shelves. Used an Escort RS Turbo intercooler and Aquamist 5th injector setup. Engine was rebuilt using stock parts but with machined pistons to lower the C/R a bit. Was great fun and I loved it.

that sounds like proper old school tuning! i like it. I just cheated and took a 1.8 20 valve turbo from a Audi TT then just had to re-wire accordingly. Once mapped it was putting out about 260bhp

Similar story, £3k on cycle to work scheme and the rest on 0% credit card. There was no shortage of lbs who were willing to do that deal😂

Same, 2 eMTBs, 4 months apart.

My money is still in the bank earning interest!

Same here for the 19 levo expert via LBS and v12 finance. I am using interest free credit over 4 years, low monthly payments and keep my own savings in the isa's.

Bike is paid off in a short while i have just realised now I type this - happy days...

edit here too - sold my stumpy for a deposit, think it was £1k.

Took £3k out of my savings in 2019. Don't know what tf I would do if I had to replace it at current day prices (5k+). Thank god it seems to be fairly immortal 😑

Because the cost of credit has to come from somewhere, quite often if you are paying cash you get a better price than paying credit. Up to you to work out if the price saving is greater or less than the interest your money would make in that time...

Here's what I gave up: '02 CLK55. I wasn't driving it much, wife was nagging me to sell it, so I maliciously complied and brought home a Rail 5. That was two years ago. Got quite the eye roll at first - never mind building wheels, building another bike, etc - but now she's really happy that I'm out riding 4-5 times a week for my physical and mental health (and I've got my old legs back, that won her, er, heart long ago!).

Now have to ease her into my new hobby: SCUBA.

The LBS can usually do a good deal with the credit supplier such that a zero % finance deal will cost them only slightly above the bank rate. So right now, that is more than it has been for a while, which means that you might get another 5% off the bike (if the seller has the authority to do so). That is worth it if you have the cash/funds available to pay for the bike, and have even more available.

But if you use the zero % credit deal then you can keep your cash where it is currently invested. Those funds are also available for any emergency that might happen, or maybe a buying opportunity that might crop up. Retaining control of those funds is always a good thing. Once you have spent the money, it's gone and if needed can only be partly replaced by selling the bike!

As long as you don't take the credit over a longer time than you would normally keep the bike, it's not a problem!

In the U.S once you reach 59.5 you can take money out of your IRA without a penalty. We actually don’t have to take anything out until age 72! We just pay ordinary income taxes on any amount we take out. Each year we have to take what is called a “required minimum distribution” So I used these cash distributions to buy 3 Etmb’s until I settled on the one I really wanted and sold the first two. Sometimes old age has it’s benefits 😜
