No, not next to a field of crops, just grass. That photo was taken on the Viking Way, an ancient right of way, known as a public bridleway. The term "bridleway gives away what they were originally for, horses. A bridle is the headgear on a horse.
The soil there is predominantly clay based, so it is sticky and does not drain well. I would not normally ride there at that time of year because I know how muddy it can get, but it had been dry for weeks so I thought I'd be OK. The section of the Viking Way I was on at the time is quite steep, but despite that it was still very muddy. I almost turned back at the point where the photo was taken. I had stopped to clear the mud because although the wheel would go round I was concerned that I might lose the paint off the frame! Two walkers were coming up the Way and assured me that it "wasn't too bad". It was worse! :eek:

Well it was proper mud :) I got similar result on a path between 2 cornfields...
 
Did you go for a ride through the sewage centre ?Have you thought about some mudguards
 
Snap............. a plastic paint scraper has now been added to my tool kit.......amazing how you can never find a suitable stick when you most need one
Note deliberate mistake .....lying bike down on the derailleur ugh
