Well you can still buy a new 2018 Race 29 from Commencal for $3999, so quite a bit less than that I would imagine.

I've been eyeballin' that XL-sized 29er w/EX1 drivetrain for a while, hoping a friend of mine would snag it

I've sold a few of my used eMTBs over the past 5 years, and generally go with one of two formulas (or some combo therein):
  • Half or more off original MSRP for anything more than a year old (they're not good financial investments... mental and physical investments, sure)
  • About a dollar per mile off MSRP, depending on the bike's condition - however that translates to in euros, pounds etc

Well I put it on Facebook sale pages today , fetched 2500 sold in an hour , sold a cube hardtail yesterday in an afternoon . People are desperate for bikes

Lol, those are not good formulas right now.
Put the bike up for what you paid for it months (years) ago new and watch it sell. Used market in western US is so crazy. People can’t buy new bikes because they are completely sold out, and used bikes are in such high demand with all indoor activities still extremely limited, people are paying unreasonable prices.

And if you get a bunch of offers in the first 24 hours at or near your listed price, you put it up for too cheap. Take it down and repost the next day for even more money.

I thought this but sadly didn’t work for me I recently sold two very nice analogue Santa Cruz bikes with high specs and they didn’t fetch anything near what I thought they would of
If I had more room I would of kept them

Depends on the bike I guess , would have thought Santa cruze would have sold well , how old were they . My daughters just sold her two vitus escarps for a very decent price , bike prices have gone up massively in the last year or so which is also helping I think . Been having a clear out and everything I’ve advertised has sold same day , wheels tyres and bikes

Sold a 2019 Hightower lt mint condition medium spec components £2400

2017 Tallboy mint condition with really really high spec factory suspension chris king xx1 etc
£1900

Maybe there good prices I thought they would go for more tho

I dont think high value bikes ever go for that much - in ebikes, and using Specilized as an example, I would expect to take much of a hit on a Levo Comp, if the sell for 5k I would expect to get 3.5-4k for one if around a year old/current model and in good nick, but an works retailing at 10k I wouldnt pay more than 6 k for.

I think your right , people won’t pay 2/3 of new price for high end stuff because they can buy a new mid spec for less .
People are also scared of used carbon bikes , and the high end are usually carbon , they are a big risk ,and people often think it’s being sold because it has hidden damage ,
we had a hell of a job selling my daughters high spec carbon enduro because it had some marks on it , but both her alloy vitus enduro bikes fetched an amazing price

I'm not sure about the used bike market across the pond, but after a few years of selling several via online classified in the US (mostly via Craigslist), I've found that the wording and photos I use in my ads have a LOT to do with the legitimacy or seriousness of the responses I get, as well as the eventual prices I fetch. This includes a couple I've sold since pandemania struck.

In my ads, I provide several decent photos from multiple angles (backgrounds matter!). And I don't simply provide a link to specs, I detail them, along with any customizations. Within the ad, I usually bury some codeword or phrase I ask folks to include in their response, preferably in the SU heading. I don't cut and paste from the mfr's marketing hype - most legit buyers will search that crap out themselves.

I also say something like, "Lowball offers and 'is it still available?' inquiries," especially those with no specific questions about the unit I'm selling, "will be ignored." Believe it or not, this helps weed out tire kickers, real-life and virtual.

Off-topic ( a bit), I've been taking notes on some of my buyers, particularly the ones who, like me, have health issues and need pedal assist to be able to ride again - it's inspiring. One guy, a retired airline pilot, drove 13 hours because he'd been searching that far to find the specific model I'd listed (Bulls E-Stream EVO FS3), and I didn't want to deal with HazMat shipping BS. I've actually made riding buddies out of a few buyers from in my region, and (pre-pandemic) would meet them at trailheads roughly halfway between us. One dude lives about a half hour away - we've probably done more than a dozen rides the past couple years.

I'm using some of their stories to help me write a biz plan for my 4th career change (at 58 YO - yikes!), and already have a few "references" attesting to folks' experiences buying ebikes from me. Ya never know where these things will lead!

To be fair, in your case once the newer model of those bikes came out yours would have dropped significantly in value. For my case the Megatower I recently sold is still SC’s latest long travel 29er.

Sold for $4500 cash with 2+ year old parts on it, and they buyer thought he was getting a great deal. Was very happy with that as I say able to pick up the lower end Decoy for that same price. Not sure if it’s an upgrade or not... but the Megatower didn’t have a motor. Lol

Here in Arizona (and I think the West and East coast in general) the second hand bike market is crazy right now. Stuff is selling for quite a bit more than its worth which convinced me to sell my 2016 hardtail Diamondback bottom of the line "Hook" model. It had put a Fox 34 fork on it but I paid $700+$400 for the bike and fork new and sold it for $1400 on Facebook within a couple days...

Like someone mentioned above, presentation goes a long ways. So many people post stuff for sale on CL and FB marketplace and the like without even posting a picture. They post a brief description and say "Message me with serious offers only!" Lol, I guess a lot of people don't really wanna sell their stuff. All you have to do is; clean it up, and post some decent photos with a reasonable description.
