As a rear tyre they actually work pretty well in mud as there's very little centre tread to clog and they have a good edge to rail turns when leant over properly.
what they do lack is straight line braking and climbing traction.
so if you tend to ride scottish forests with a lot of fire road/doubletrack climbs to access steeper more natural twisty descents they're apretty decent choice all year round.

I have an S-Works 6Fattie with 27.5 x 3" tires. Tonight I've swapped out the alloy 29ers on my SL carbon comp for the 27.5" and I will give it a ride tomorrow.
The tire clearance is about 3/8" on the sides in the back. Plenty of clearance in the front. Its dry so should not be an issue. If this setup was going to be permanent I might want a bit more clearance in the back.
Part of my interest was to get a feel for running carbon wheels and an overall lighter setup. The overall bike weight dropped from 18.01kg to 17.11kg. The weight drop comes from the following sources:
*** One note the weights are a little off because I forgot to initially swap the large discs on the 29s for the smaller discs on the 27.5"
Cassette goes from NX to XX1
Front wheel goes from alloy + 2.5 tire @ 2.29kg to Traverse SL + 3" @ 2.02kg
Back goes from alloy + 2.6" + NX @ 3.185kg to Traverse SL + 3" + XX1 @ 2.4kg
Looking forward to riding this setup.
I’ve got a SJ Expert 6 Fattie with the Traverse 27.5 x 38 carbon wheels on it, and 3.0 tyres.
I was wanting to try the rear on my SL, but thought the tyre would be too wide.
Good to know that it’ll fit - although it’s very rarely not muddy round here!
I’ve only ridden the SL with 29’s twice so far, so would like a few more shots before trying the 27.5 rear to get a better comparison.
Could you write here the exactly drivetrain? which component is Zee and which is Deore?
You’ll see if you google 10 speed Shimano you’ll see. There’s quite a few options from cheap SLX (RD-M670) to expensive, but still affordable (to ebikers!), XTR (RD-M986 mech etc). HG54 chain etc
Gary’s the expert here though (and can tip off to cheaper no doubt) but he led me to look into this through his abundant comments on this on here.
I've removed it, but not ridden without it. its alot cleaner than normal levo, it has a alu bracket that screws into a motor mount. so when removed there are no holes left.
I do kinda wish they had included chain guide mounts on the motor would be cool to see something off the shelf on there/pimper.
I do not have my SL here at the moment, is the chainguide easy to remove?

Standard Alloy Rovals are 2240 with just rim tape fitted. (Ie: no rotors/cassette etc)
1 bolt, very easy.
Hmmm, i hope it works with the standard mounted chainwheel as well.

Fit the RockShox Pike today.
Very Shiny! What is your reasoning for Rockshox over Fox? I'm wondering if to change to 36s for Lyrics later down the line.

To be honest I tried the 2.1 Lyrik 160mm recently and I thought that there was quite a lot of dive in the first third of travel over low speed compressions. I'd set it up for my weight / riding style. I had to crank up the LSC to almost full to make it feel close to how I wanted.
I found the Fox 36 much more compliant in the initial to mid stroke.
But I have been used to the way Fox performs over RS for a while - could be down to muscle memory / how I've adapted more than Fox being better..
I will let you know how I get on with Pike.
Is the Pike lighter than the Fox 34?

Yes, almost 200g lighter it seems, but the original 34 is the Rhythm, I believe the lowers are a heavier grade Alu compared to Fox's higher end forks.
I was searching for both a few days ago, and could find the Lyric Ultimate for almost the same cost as the Pike Ultimate.
Is that a 150mm or did you step up to 160mm?
Its 150mm. Would be too twitchy for me with 160mm.
Yeah I did think about the Lyrik but in the end Pike will suit what I'm riding. And @Gary also recommended it

I’m going to stick with the Fox 34 short term and see how I get on. The Lyric 160mm on the Rail I had felt really plush, and was the nicest fork I’ve had. Doesn’t necessarily mean it’ll feel the same on a bike that’s ~4.5kg lighter though!
You need to tell us the frame size, and what you’ve changed ???

What is the benefit of using the Chromag chainwheel? The standard SRAM chainwheel uses X-Sync like the Chromag.
Large.
Changed tires, tubeless, saddle, stem, handlebar, grips, pedals, removed chainguide.
