Specialized Kenevo

What owners actually know.

Specialized's full-power Kenevo came in two generations. Gen 1 (2018-2019) was a 180mm coil-sprung 27.5 sledge with the Brose-based Specialized 1.3 motor and Öhlins-heavy builds. Gen 2 launched in October 2019 as a MY2020 bike and sold through to around 2022/23 with the 2.1 Brose Mag motor, a 700Wh battery and S2/S3/S4 sizing; it was the subject of Specialized's landmark four-year motor-warranty extension of July 2020 for the 2.1 belt and sprag failures. No gen 3 ever came, and the 2026 Levo R now occupies the slot. Motor internals are covered in the Brose / Specialized motor report; this page is about the bike.

Most owners report no problems. The clusters below are the minority who hit something: every count is distinct owners, and every claim links to the post it came from.

The Verdict

The Kenevo's record is the biggest in this whole series and it tells the definitive early-eMTB story: a beloved sledge attached to a motor program that failed young and a company that, uniquely, fixed the relationship in public.

Gen 2's 2.1 motor failures (drive lost while the motor spins; the worst owner on his fourth unit at 500-mile intervals) produced the forum's landmark manufacturer moment: a CEO letter and a retroactive 4-year motor warranty posted directly into the community in July 2020.

Around that drama the bike itself was remarkably sound: no systemic frame cracks in eight years and 2,416 posting members, spring-rate and short-crank wisdom that became forum institutions, and a 29er conversion afterlife so good that converters still call a 2020 frame a weapon in 2025.

Buying one now is a used-market decision: the motor warranty era has lapsed, replacement 2.1 motors and batteries are the cost risk, and the right bike is one with documented motor history and ideally the 29er or mullet treatment already done.
