Shimano STEPS legacy reliability
A veteran's service history: the E8000 created the modern eMTB form factor, and its two signature failures, E010 torque-sensor death (66 reporters) and BB-bearing collapse (48), are now thoroughly mapped, alongside 30,000 km survivors and a thriving DIY repair counter-culture born of Shimano's no-spares policy.
Discontinued since the EP8 took over in 2020, every out-of-warranty fault prices as a whole motor or an independent rebuild. Buy a surviving example on evidence of an easy life, and budget as if the warranty is long gone: because it is.
