Shimano EP8 family reliability
Most EP8s just work: the loudest cluster is the coast clack (75 reporters), which is character rather than failure, while the genuinely ride-ending stories, the E010 torque-sensor write-offs (18) and the no-error cutout saga (29), are small against a record that includes 37,500 km survivors.
The real ownership risk is Shimano's no-spares policy: any out-of-warranty internal fault prices as a whole motor or an independent rebuild. The EP801 is usually quieter and better-featured, but its era owns the cutout saga: judge the host bike's battery and harness history, not just the motor.
