Alloy 29er trail/enduro eMTB with Bosch CX motor (750Wh)

The Whyte E-160 2024 is the British brand's aluminium enduro flagship and one of the most popular UK-engineered eMTBs of the late 2010s/early 2020s. Headline numbers: 160mm fork, 155mm rear, Bosch Performance Line CX Gen 4 at 85Nm and 600W peak with a 2.9kg motor mass (with PU2.0 firmware path to 120Nm Gen 5 mapping where compatible), a removable 750Wh Bosch PowerTube battery, 27.0kg claimed, 64.8 degree head angle and reach 455 to 510mm across M, L and XL. Priced from GBP 5,499 base. Production status is discontinued: Whyte has since pivoted to the carbon ELyte 150 platform. The E-160 remains widely available on the used market and represents one of the best-value used Bosch CX enduro tools in the UK.
Drive system and range. The Bosch Performance Line CX Gen 4 shipped at 85Nm and 600W peak. Where the bike has received Bosch's PU2.0 firmware update path it lifts to 120Nm at the wheel and 750W peak (the Gen 5 mapping). The 750Wh PowerTube battery is removable through the downtube. Real-world range on 750Wh on a 27kg alloy enduro sits at two to three hours of mixed alpine riding. @Ark notes some owners have flashed Bosch firmware for derestricted speed (180 euros, USB cable + WhatsApp service) but warns workarounds become incompatible when new firmware versions release and manual phone updates revert to UK speed limits.
Geometry and handling. 64.8 degrees up front in the stock setting, adjustable via the Shape. It Link flip-chip (high/low) for 0.6 degree HA / 8mm BB drop. Reach steps cleanly: 455 (M), 483 (L), 510 (XL). Chainstays are a uniform 446mm and wheelbase tops out at 1300mm on XL. The E-160 ships in full 29er or mullet from factory depending on rear link fitted, and @Plummet confirms BB height is 347mm with mullet-to-29er conversion steepening the head angle by 0.5 degrees in high position.
Build and value. One base trim at GBP 5,499 / 27.0kg. Spec: RockShox ZEB 160mm fork (44mm offset, DebonAir, Rush RC damper), RockShox Deluxe Select R shock, SRAM Guide RE four-piston brakes and SRAM GX Eagle AXS. @mooby77 reports purchasing an E-160-RS-MX Mullet 2023 for GBP 4,700 with common mods including KYDEX bash plate extender, Bosch Mini Remote repositioning via Flow App and frame protection. Standout: SRAM GX Eagle AXS at the base trim. Questionable: 27.0kg is heavy by 2025 standards; pedal strike issues are widely reported.
Caveats and known gripes.
- Pedal strikes. @mild_bore on a Medium and @Kiwiscoot on a Mullet XL both report pedal strike issues due to the 347mm low BB. @mooby77 reports 150mm cranks "significantly reduced pedal strikes".
- 27.0kg. Heavy versus 2025 carbon Avinox rivals at 21 to 23kg.
- Discontinued. Production status is discontinued; new buys are increasingly via used market. Warranty support is limited to the original warranty period.
- Bosch Gen 4. The 85Nm Gen 4 spec is older than the current 120Nm Gen 5 mapping; confirm PU2.0 firmware update status with the seller.
- Firmware workaround fragility. @Ark warns that derestricted firmware workarounds become incompatible with new Bosch firmware versions and require ongoing maintenance.
- Three sizes only. M (455mm reach), L (483mm) and XL (510mm): no S or XXL. Riders under 1.70m or over 1.95m should fit-check carefully.
Verdict. The 2024 E-160 is one of the most credible aluminium Bosch CX enduro eMTBs of its generation, with proper 160/155mm travel, Shape. It Link flip-chip geometry adjustment, full 29er or mullet flexibility and SRAM GX Eagle AXS at the base trim. Production status is discontinued; the used market is where the value sits, often around GBP 3,500 to 4,500 for a well-cared-for example. It suits riders chasing a budget British-engineered enduro tool with strong upgrade potential and Bosch ecosystem support. Buyers wanting a current-production warranty path, carbon construction, lighter system weight or higher BB should look at the Whyte ELyte 150 (carbon), Specialized Kenevo or Orbea Wild. Production status: discontinued.
