Hardtail Bosch CX Gen 5 (up to 100Nm via Flow app) with 800Wh battery

The Trek Powerfly+ 8 Gen 5 2026 is Trek's Bosch-powered aluminium hardtail eMTB, updated with the new Bosch Performance Line CX Gen 5 motor (120 Nm torque, 250 W rated, 750 W manufacturer-claimed peak, 2.8 kg) and an 800 Wh battery. 120 mm fork on a hardtail aluminium chassis. Two trims — the 4 Equipped at £3,250 and the (base) at €4,999. Four sizes from S to XL, reach 410-490 mm, head angle 65.5-66.5 degrees, chainstays 442-461 mm. The community read in one line: a serious-spec Bosch CX Gen 5 hardtail at sub-£3,500 for the entry trim, with the latest motor and largest battery in the Bosch ecosystem and the trade-off of no rear suspension.
Drive system and range. The Bosch CX Gen 5 is the most refined eMTB motor on the market — 120 Nm torque, smooth and quiet, free OTA firmware updates via the eBike Flow app, and the deepest dealer network in eMTB. The 800 Wh battery is class-leading capacity and removable for off-bike charging. On a hardtail with lower drivetrain drag, real-world range is genuinely strong — 60 to 90 km in mixed terrain on Trail/eMTB mode is realistic, with extreme cases pushing further on Eco mode for proper all-day touring duty.
Geometry and handling. Trail-friendly hardtail geometry. The size S sits slightly slacker (65.5 degree head angle) and shorter at 442 mm chainstay than the M/L/XL sizes (66.5 degrees, 461 mm chainstay), reflecting Trek's sensible approach to small-rider sizing. Reach progresses 410 mm (S), 440 mm (M), 465 mm (L), and 490 mm (XL). Wheelbase 1151 to 1259 mm. 120 mm front fork keeps the bike trail-capable rather than enduro-aggressive. Full 29er expected.
Build and value. Two trims. The 4 Equipped at £3,250 is the value entry — at this price expect a RockShox 35 Silver or Suntour Aion class fork, Shimano Deore 4-piston brakes with 200 mm rotors, Shimano Deore 12-speed drivetrain, and the Bosch Kiox 300 display. The base trim at €4,999 steps up suspension and drivetrain. £3,250 for a Bosch CX Gen 5 hardtail with 800 Wh battery is one of the strongest value plays in the entire 2026 eMTB market — well below the equivalent full-suspension entry point.
Caveats and known gripes.
- Hardtail format means no rear suspension. Riders coming from full-suspension eMTBs will find rough trails punishing, and the platform is best suited to smoother trail/XC and gentle touring rather than aggressive descending.
- 66.5 degree head angle on M/L/XL is on the steeper side of modern trail geometry. Nimble at slow speed but less stable on faster descents.
- Fixed 461 mm chainstays across M/L/XL (with 442 mm on S) means no proper size-tuning across the main sizes.
- No community forum data yet for the 2026 platform. Long-term ownership patterns will emerge through the year.
- Limited trim choice. Just two trims with no premium full-spec option at this canonical entry.
Verdict. The Trek Powerfly+ 8 Gen 5 2026 is the value play of the Bosch CX Gen 5 hardtail category — newest motor, largest battery and proper Trek frame quality at £3,250 entry. It suits buyers who want full-power Bosch ecosystem at the lowest possible price, who don't need rear suspension, who appreciate Trek's vast dealer network for warranty and service, and who use the bike for trail/XC/touring rather than aggressive descending. Look elsewhere if you want full suspension, modern slack-and-long geometry, or carbon weight savings. Production status: current, two trims, four sizes.
