Trail eMTB SL with Rocky Mountain Dyname S4 Lite motor (75Nm/700W) and 480Wh battery

The Rocky Mountain Instinct Powerplay 2025 is the Canadian brand's carbon trail eMTB and the home of the in-house Dyname S4 Lite motor (per published press testing on the SL trim). Headline numbers: 150mm fork, 140mm rear, claimed 20.3kg system weight on the SL trim, 65.0 degree head angle and reach 430 to 505mm across S, M, L and XL. Trim ladder runs SL at GBP 7,999 and C70 at GBP 8,499 (23.5kg). Rocky Mountain's in-house Dyname motor and the Powerplay's high-pivot Smoothlink layout are the brand's signature; the 2025 SL build is the lightest expression yet, with the Dyname S4 Lite tuned for the SL trail-bike brief.
Drive system and range. Per published press testing, the Dyname S4 Lite delivers 75Nm of torque and a 700W peak (up from 65Nm/550W in initial spec) at a 2.26kg motor weight. It is removable via the underside of the downtube. The 480Wh battery requires two bolts to release before sliding out toward the bottom bracket. An Overtime Pack 2.0 range extender adds 314Wh for an effective 794Wh total. @Fr3nch reports a 2023 Instinct Powerplay (previous-generation Dyname motor) ran 1,000km with no motor protection warnings despite the rider's own assessment of poor shifting technique: a positive durability anecdote. The Dyname's display sits flush on the top tube with four riding modes including a "Ludicrous" boost.
Geometry and handling. 65.0 degrees up front is bang on the modern trail eMTB norm. Reach steps cleanly: 430 (S), 455 (M), 480 (L), 505 (XL). Chainstays are a uniform 440mm and wheelbase tops out at 1290mm on XL. The Smoothlink four-bar high-pivot layout is one of Rocky Mountain's signatures: @Suns_PSD highlights the high-pivot choice as designed to manage chain kickback effects on the rear suspension. @Lantz notes the Instinct's straight seat tube accepts long dropper posts, a meaningful detail for taller riders.
Build and value. Two trims. SL (GBP 7,999, 20.3kg) is the lightweight build with the Dyname S4 Lite motor; spec includes RockShox or Fox 35-class suspension and SRAM Eagle Transmission depending on regional configurator. C70 (GBP 8,499, 23.5kg) is the full-power Dyname-equipped trim with a heavier full-power motor and battery package. Standout: Dyname S4 Lite at 20.3kg on a high-pivot carbon trail frame is a unique offering. Questionable: the SL's 480Wh battery requires tools to remove and is conservative versus 600Wh-plus Bosch SX-powered rivals.
Community-verified strengths.
- Motor durability anecdotes. @jbv reports a Powerplay Instinct on the original Dyname motor lasting four years with hard heavy-rider use, with issues all repaired by service. @Fr3nch adds 1,000km without motor protection warnings on a 2023 build.
- High-pivot benefits. @Suns_PSD credits the high-pivot for managing chain kickback through the suspension stroke.
- Long dropper support. @Lantz confirms the straight seat tube accepts long droppers, which is a real-world fit advantage for tall riders.
Caveats and known gripes.
- Rocky Mountain financial uncertainty. @SurlyJohn reports Rocky Mountain has gone into liquidation, making Gen 1 Instinct Powerplay battery sourcing extremely difficult. Confirm Rocky Mountain's current ownership and warranty support status at point of sale.
- Speed sensor failures. @mrjr1000 reports a third speed sensor failure on a 2021 C70 in two years, with torque sensor arms breaking at the same spot. Parts availability may be limited to warranty bikes.
- Battery removal via tools. The SL's 480Wh battery is removable but requires two bolts to release, less convenient than slide-out Bosch PowerTube designs.
- Dyname motor service network. Dyname is a Rocky Mountain in-house design; service expertise is concentrated at Rocky Mountain dealers, which may be thin outside Canada/USA/UK.
- SL motor power tier. 75Nm is light versus Bosch CX Gen 5 (120Nm) or DJI Avinox M1 (105Nm) full-power rivals; suits trail-not-enduro use.
Verdict. The 2025 Instinct Powerplay SL is a unique high-pivot Smoothlink trail eMTB with Rocky Mountain's in-house Dyname S4 Lite motor and a 20.3kg system weight. It suits riders who value high-pivot suspension behaviour, the Dyname motor's character and Rocky Mountain's Canadian engineering heritage. Buyers needing the most powerful motor, easy slide-out battery removal or rock-solid long-term warranty support should look at the Specialized Levo SL, Trek Fuel EXe or Whyte E-Lyte 150. Production status: current.
