Drive system and range. The Rocky Mountain Dyname 4.0 is a proprietary motor system, delivering 108 Nm of torque and a 700 W manufacturer-claimed peak at a 3.0 kg motor weight. The Dyname's most distinctive characteristic is its strong long-term reliability profile in heavy use: jbv reports a Rocky Mountain Powerplay Instinct "with the original motor lasted 4 years with hard frequent riding by heavy rider, motor had some issues but all repaired and still going". Build and value. Only the base trim is on file at £5,991. thbo notes that the "Instinct Powerplay C90 BC Edition and 2021 model have alloy triangle and alloy rims, not carbon" — useful detail given the trim-naming inconsistency.
Community-verified strengths. First, motor durability: jbv reports 4 years of heavy use with the original motor. Second, Smoothlink suspension is well-praised: Lantz notes Rocky Mountain's straight seat tube allows for long dropper posts. Third, the Dyname motor's traction-control programme is well-developed.
Caveats and known gripes. First, Rocky Mountain's recent corporate situation: SurlyJohn warns "Rocky Mountain has gone into liquidation, making replacement batteries for Gen 1 Instinct Powerplay extremely difficult to source. Battery reconditioning may be the only option" — a serious concern for long-term parts availability.
